As in Animal Farm, you are kept together by mutual hatred of a defined entity. It is all that you have. And it works exceptionally well to maintain party discipline/purity.

Democrats have done an amazing job of brainwashing their voting base to value party affiliation over ideas. That you can't make it in society without Democrats in charge.
