Meh. He could ask vendors to pull there merchandise for the new season.
That would hurt them more than having golf pros on there salary.

No way having a pga professional on staff at Dick's Sprting Goods made a positive impact on the bottom line. I'm not buying that.
Posted on 7/22/14 at 8:21 pm to OutofTownAlumni
But why would he do that?
I mean hell, the fact that Dick's had jobs for that many Class A pros was a freaking godsend in the first place
How about working to keep all these community clubs from closing which is both killing the game AND costing these professionals their jobs?

It got ping and titleist clubs into the doors. It also got the advertising better. 2010 we did 1.2 mil in golf. 2013 we did 2.4 mil. Dicks as a hole made a ton through golf. My store was 18-20% of the business. Most were 12-15%. Pretty big impact. Dicks single handily closed a tom of Edwin watts stores due to that.
Doesn't matter what u think. It did. I saw the numbers first hand.

hold on Zee I am not hating on Dick's, honestly my first reaction upon seeing this article was much more on the game as a whole
FWIW I figured this was coming as I saw the Dick's pathetic 1Q numbers floating around the internet some time ago

Shank I agree. And we are working towards it. I'm trying my hardest to become relevant in my section to one day be on the national board to help with this. It's a shame that they don't change rules for courses to have set pricing and also set a min amount of pros they must have on staff. I want to change that. But one thing he can do now is make sure these people who bought products from dicks are buying it from clubs. He can make it where the pga buys this product in bulk and clubs can purchase older product at the discounted rate other brick and mortar shops had. There are a tom if things he can do. He just won't because if reputation.

That's why I left last year honestly. I know you aren't bashing. Trust me.

Obviously you know I troll a ton on this site. But I am not trolling here. I know my shite about this stuff.

I think the decline in golf is leveling off. Or at least I hope.
A LOT of my friends (24-27 years old) have picked up the game in the last few years. We all finally have jobs that give us a little extra change in our pockets. Go out and play after work at a course offering cheap memberships or twilight play.
Just gotta keep trying to grow the game.

Made anywhere from 32-50k. Highest paid was a friend of mine who is now store manager. He made 50. His store was also the one who was top 5 of all stores each year. My store ranked top 20 each year and I was around mid 40's. A lot of single decker stores were around 35k. No commission. Only bonus which was 12% of your salary if you hit each quarter. 1.5 each quarter then double it for each quarter at year end.

I think we will see a better price structure in the near future to have all munis around the 35k rounds a year trend. That's what I'd like to see. Maybe not that number in all markets obviously.

So they are going to save over 20 million dollars a year by making this move. Pretty smart. I would have made the same one.

They will lose a ton more in golf sales IMO. If they lose 20 mil and $1 they lose. And they will. Easily.
I would've kept the pros in the bigger stores. And have them run 2-3 stores and pay them 5k more. That's what I would have done.

Well if you had all the answers, why did you jump ship rather than stick around and try and make a difference?

I did try. I had a meeting with the vp of operations and other dms. We have a plan and they shot is down. We said lack of training was going to cost them. And IMO it did. I went to the dicks store in BR 2 years ago and was embarrassed. He didn't have the training. I didn't either. I was told to close the first day I worked. Had no clue what was going on. But I called other pros to get the training. There was no system to transfer merchandise. We created a system and they shot that down. I tried my hardest but not bonusing based on a ridiculous plan was the worst. I had to get out. I saw this coming. Not to this extinct tho.
They could have also paid pros less and allowed them to teach keeping a percentage. Tried that too. Shot down.
I still have the presentation if you want to see it. Lol
