yeah ... someone who shoots 90 every time out ain't gonna shoot 80 cause they bought new clubs that are more forgiving than the cast irons he already has ... better clubs, i.e. a better fit for their game or a better fit for their weaknesses, will help the 75 guy more than the 90 guy ...
sure, but you said it won't help one bit
if the guy is playing some hand me down clubs that don't fit him at all, new clubs could certainly help him shave some strokes
new clubs help everyone, but the proper fit is key, even if you aren't a single digit handicap
just because you're cool enough to shoot 75 on the internet with some 10 year old clubs, doesnt mean that new forgiving irons aren't gonna help someone new to the game

maybe its just the crowd I associate myself with, but I disagree with both of these points
Yeah, I suppose it varies based on personal experience. I think differentiating between the hardcore golfer and the casual golfer is important.
Personally, I just don't see a lot of young people buying clubs in stores - whether it's a retailer, a pro shop, or wherever. It brings the Amazon/Ebay discussion to the forefront as well.
I do think golf is a broad game (young and old play), but to me is seems like the older crowd is more all-consuming (buying products, playing with more regularity, watching on TV).

how many get fitted for clubs? ...
and no one's trying to brag about their golf game ... good grief ... it's a debate ...

As said throughout the thread, I don't think that your regular players are buying equipment every year, especially your better golfers. Another major issue with buying at Dick's is how you try the club. Nobody should want to hit off a mat into a screen. Especially when the screen is telling you that you are hitting 30+yards further than normal. Most of the guys I know go to a high end range to try the product at their golf shop. Then they go buy them online for less with the correct fit.

Those who play or watch golf are generally a higher class of people.
This attitude refutes your point.

i said getting fitted makes more impact, but I don't think its a requirement
newer clubs with larger sweet spots are gonna create better shots.....I don't think you can argue that
you are the one dropping handicaps in this thread

Does Dick's let you try clubs for free? I've honestly never asked.
A lot of the small chains (like Nevada Bobs) charge fitting fees and let you roll the fitting costs back into store credit.

more places need to do this to dissuade people from going hit a few drivers with no intention of purchasing at the retail store
I'm guilty of it several times, but I typically try to not leave without buying a glove, or some balls
I can't tell you the last club I paid retail for, even though I buy a new driver and new irons once a year or more on average

I love the comments from people who have no idea about the business and what really happened.

As a person who worked there as a pro I do have extensive knowledge. In fact I worked directly with the VP of operations.

I said about everything in the other thread.
Stock being publicly hurt them. For 3 straight years well over half the stores hit or exceeded plan. The biggest marketing tool they had was advertisement a pga in each store. You have no idea how big that was. And people do buy clubs each year. Some buy 299 sets some buy brand new. The thing was that after last year being one of the best golf years for dicks ever they added 5-8% to all stores which was retarded. That would be 15-18% from 2 years ago which is unheard of. These pros were also told as long as Ed was CEO there would always be a pro in each store. These pros were lied too and I really hope something happens. I have about 20 close friends who just lost there jobs. They walked in today and was handed a severance package. One week pay every year worked for dicks. Terrible.

Honestly if they would have listened to me and a store manager who was a pro in St Louis they would still have pros. They needed a regional golf pro due to the lack of training pros were getting. Specially the guy in BR.

I can see a class action suit coming very soon. Not sure what case they have but if guess they have something.

They own Golf Galaxy and probably feel that golf enthusiast will just go to Golf Galaxy to speak to a pro.

Why?
Because a CEO lied to them?
I don't see it
