It's not a shitty line and you only want to ignore it because you know it's true.
In what warped sense of logic does a sport that revolves around running with/throwing an egg with your hands take precedence of the name 'football' over a much older sport that is actually built entirely on the idea of kicking a ball with your feet. It's a ridiculous notion and you know it.
I know it's the name you gave your egg race game over there, and it's just what you know, but it makes about as much sense as calling a car a bike and a bike a car.
No need to apologise to me, it should be the other way round. I know how much we'd hate it if a load of bandwagoners jumped on for the ride and embarrassed the nation with the most pompous chant ever. So you do have my sympathy, we get our match days ruined by idiots who are more intent on sitting down spectating rather than supporting the team and creating an atmosphere, and they complain about those of us who do as they claim we 'spoil their view' or 'make them feel uncomfortable' or some kind of drivel that was previously only expected of a Frenchman.
As for the World Cup, it was great fun like usual whilst it lasted, pubs and bars filled up with the usual rowdy crowd, the usual repertoire of traditional chants took hold of the whole nation again, we all looked back in hope to that time we won the World Cup. It was all fun and games, shame it came to a premature end, but as a massive football nation the rest of the World Cup was still great fun as there was some excellent football on display. We have 2016 to look forward to now with a huge group of very talented youngsters coming through the ranks at their clubs.
Not to forget the biggest league in the world is not far from starting. That's what we're really looking forward to.

It's still a ball, just like a Rugby (ya know, another version of "football") ball. It is a strange name, just as it is that rugby is called football. That does not mean calling it "handegg" or whatever else is clever or true. The roots of rugby football, association football, and American football are all in the same evolutionary line of games (with rugby and American football being much closer relatives obviously). So yes, it is a shitty "line" to try and mock American football. The game has evolved away from the use of the feet as a common method of moving the ball, but that does not mean you're clever by repeating tired "handegg" shite.

Embarrassed the nation? Far from it. Sure, some found it annoying, and it did get overdone at times. It was still a fun rallying cry, and a damned good example of how Americans support our country even if the sport itself is not hugely important to them. I'd rather have overly obnoxious bandwagoners than spectators who know the game like the back of their hand but show no energy or passion for it.

Man, you're so right. I wish we used the same chants over and over. I'd hate if innovation was ever a fun way to add some new spice to things. I'd also hate to see people who normally don't care about a sport get fired up and excited about it. That would be a damned shame. Though, it is genuinely good to hear that failing miserably in your group did not dampen your ability to enjoy a great tournament.

Cute cop-out. Saying EPL is "what we're really looking forward to" like the World Cup was inconsequential. That's pitiful. I love watching the EPL, but the World Cup is still the epitome of association football fandom and the premier event in the sport.

It's the name of the sport because it developed from one of the other codes of football, specifically Rugby football. I don't see the same amount of derision for Australian Rules Football or for Gaelic Football, which also use the hands. In the end looking down on a sport because of its name is pretty silly.
You're name is also silly because both terms, football and soccer, are words developed by the English, as soccer developed as an abbreviation of Association Football in Oxford, I believe in the 1880's. The term was used synonymously or in conjunction with the term football in the United States until the 1970's, when the United States Soccer Football Federation dropped the football from the title to become the United States Soccer Federation.
I have a strong feeling this is a troll account.
