Bad Movie Year.

Overall BO is down 15-18% depending on whose figures you believe. This weeks flicks were stupidly weak. I have hope for Guardians of the Galaxy, but this is the worst summer for movies in maybe 5 years.

Not really a lot to get excited about this summer, IMO.

CA2, X-Men DOFP, Dawn, and 22 Jump St were all good IMO. This summer has probably the most I've been to the movies in a while

The problem was too many good movies too early and not enough good ones late in the summer. There were too many good movies out in early May.

Terrible year for movies.
Needed a time killer the other night and the wife and I thought about a movie. 14 screens and nothing we had any interest in seeing.
We brought up how weird it was that right in the heart of the summer there was nothing on we felt like we could sit through if only to kill a couple of hours.

I've been to 3 movies this summer (apes, Godzilla, 22 jump street). I wanted to see x men but didn't get around to it . I don't think I'll go back this summer bc nothing looks interesting to me.

The highest RT score among the new releases this past weekend was a 46%.

Have you seen The Raid 2 -- Much more complex and convoluted than the original, which was one of the best action movies in recent years. Where the first dealt strictly with a raid on an apartment building over the course of a few hours and featured a mixture of machine guns and martial arts, the new movie is a sprawling story featuring prison gangs, warring mafia families, and takes place over several years. I still prefer the original but this one still kicks a lot of arse and is better than any action movie I've seen recently. It's far less gun play and more martial arts, but includes a car chase as well. Some crazy camera work makes it even better. There was one shot I was trying to figure out how they did until I found this:
one cameraman is disguised as the front seat

As I am not a studio accountant, I don't much care about the box office. That said, I've felt this was a very strong crop of summer films. This is one of the first years in which people will still remember some of the films that came out this year a decade later. Most summer films are disposable trash, quickly forgotten. This year, there were some films we might actually look back fondly on.

This Summer has had some great tentpole movies, but the second tier films are severely lacking.
Big movies I would recommend:
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
X-Men: Days of Future Past
22 Jump Street
Edge of Tomorrow
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
How to Train Your Dragon 2
Second Tier I would recommend:
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Chef
Fading Gigolo

I don't think it's a bad movie year. The summer is terrible so far. Can't wait for Hercules and Guardians though.

Winner for me this summer
Still looking forward to Herc and Lucy this weekend
Guardians next weekend
and looks to be it for summer movies because I'm kind of iffy on TMNT

Not second tier at all IMO. I'm not really a Wes Anderson devotee but this one has an incredible cast, impeccable cinematography, and a quirky sense of humor that is just fun as hell. Sure, it's a Wes Anderson cliche festival but it works better than anything he's done since Rushmore.

This has been one of the best that I can remember.

Second tier in that it's an indie movie and not marketed in the same way as the big releases. It did $55 Million total while the major releases will do that in their opening weekend.

This might be the worst year for new movies in my life- and I am old.
There has literally been NOTHING of interest that I want to go see.

That's a bummer for you, cause, as has been pointed out, there are a lot of good films out this summer.
