I guess Outback is better than Applebee's.
ETA: I'm 0.3 miles from it and starving, so it's the winner. I'll be in town for a couple more nights, and tons in the future, so keep the recommendations coming if you have 'em.
ETA2: Didn't seem to know what blue rare was, so rare rare it is.

Drive out to Chunky for some catfish one night.

Ooo, that sounds like a plan for tomorrow. You can't by chance throw peanut shells on the floor? IDK why, but that's what I associate with catfish shacks. Pineville maybe.

Weidmann's - 210 22nd Avenue Good Bar upstairs. Good Bar Downstairs. can eat full menu at both bars - Excellent food - steaks, fish, pasta. Casual upscale restaurant will be busy.
TaKrai Thai Food 6661 North Hills Drive - Our go to place for Thai food - no alcohol
Dobi's Ragin' Cajun - 4900 Poplar Springs Drive - Cajun food and best hamburger in Meridian - has a decent Bar
Mugshots - 5005 Highway 493 - Across street from Dobi's - Noisy Bar, Mugshots menu of burgers, sandwiches.
Rustler Steakhouse and Lounge - 5915 Old Highway 80 West - expensive steaks and bar.
Chunky Shoals Fish Camp - Old Highway 80 at Chunky River Bridge - Catfish, fried pickles, amber adult beverages - good catfish - they have a decent burger, steak and other stuff too.
Brickhouse Bar and Grill - 2206 Front Street around corner from Weidmann's Bar and grill stuff. If they are open there is probably a band playing and rednecks having a good time.
Aie's Taste of Thai - 1900 Front Street across from the train station. I have heard it is good but have not been there. see comments above about TaKrai.
Sake Sushi - 103 South Frontage Road - in shopping center behind Outback, Chick Fillet - good sushi, Hibachi
Mulligan's 308 Briarwood Road at briarwood Country Club - Not certain what nights they are open, but they are open to the public. Food is OK.
Hungry Heifer - 1310 14th street - Bar with bar food - close the Rush Hospital ER if you get in trouble, which you shouldn't because it's not rowdy.
La Pinata Mexican - 814 18 Avenue - tasty TexMex - our go to place. Bar with everything a gringo might want at a Mexican restaurant.
7 or 6 other Mexican places - all good but not La Pinata
No worthy Chinese food
Various juke joints and working man beer drinking establishments on back streets around town - I might go, but I wouldn't send you to any of them.
Couple of Truck Stops for all night dining with Good old boy truckers.
Three (4?) Waffle Houses
Buffalo Wildwings
Outback
Olive Garden
Applebees
Chili's
Dickey's BBQ
Squeeler's BBQ
McAlister's Deli
Cracker Barrel
Logan's
Penn's Catfish
Chick Fillet
Red Lobster
Bla Bla Bla
I am so sorry. I didn't mention we have 2 Sonics and the 2 best Popeye's stores in the entire Popeye's chain in Meridian. Two Taco Bell stores also, because sometimes you simply gotta have a Taco Bell #4 combo.
There is a Baskin Robins on North Hills for those nights when your sweetie craves a $5.00 ice cream cone.

Is the Penn's an "Express" or a full restaurant ? Penn's is good stuff. First place I ever ate fried pickles.
Posted on 7/15/14 at 10:38 pm to OTIS2
Penn's is an express store I guess but they do have ten or twelve tables. It is in the old Krystal location on the parking lot in front of the Hampton Inn on H-39 at Interstate 20/59. I like their catfish just fine, but we always go to Chunky Shoals when we decide to go out to eat catfish. Chunky Shoals is just better and has beer.
I forgot to mention the Vietnamese Gas Station on H39 beside BMW dealership. Great Shrimp, catfish and oyster Po Boys, fish oyster and shrimp patters, fried chicken and other stuff. The H-39 gas station location is duplicated at their other (nicer) place on 8th street. I go all the time, but neither location is in what I would consider a very safe location. We get them to go on H-39 and sit and eat on 8th Street. Both places have beer.
First place I ever had fried pickles was Len Lew's Beer Joint on H-45 south of West Point, MS, back in the 60's. Sliced BBQ Pork, fried Pickles and a pitcher of Michelob or Schlitz maybe Pabst. It has been a long time and a lot of miles since those days.
