Can is a defender when it comes down to it. Who can play some defensive mid if needed when you need a stop gap. He doesn't excel at either but he is decent at both like a jack of trades in the back.
Playing him that high up and depending on him to control the left side of midfield is a liability. Not that I'm complaining

from most accounts, Can is viewed as a B2B midfielder... Possibly a DM.. He has proven that he is highly flexible, so I'm not sure what "out of position" means for him...
