Sammy Martin - 1980s

for you older guys, was Sammy Martin really good or did he just play because we really weren't that strong at the rb position in the 80s?
it's just weird to see a skinny white kid playing running back like that. Was he like the Jacob Hester of his time?

He was that good. He had speed and toughness. He did not have the power of Jacob Hester though.

He was very very fast.

I remember him more for his returns and catches for some reason. He definitely was not a bruiser like Hester. He was quick as hell.

Aside from being white, he had very little in common with Hester. As a runner, he was used much more like Holiday - a speed back with little power. He was also outstanding out of the backfield or even lining up as a receiver. In the pros, he was a KR and backup WR. He could fly. Not fast for a white guy but for any guy.

Graduated from De La Salle with Sammy. The DLS football teams were bad back then but Sammy was fun to watch put on a one man show and rack up plenty yards. One of the fastest players I've ever seen run with a football. He was good at LSU and gave 100% effort all the time. If a little bigger he could have been a superstar but got a couple years in the NFL because of his speed and work ethic. Will always remember the TD pass he caught from Hodson and ran straight down the field against A&M. Their players never dreamed he was that fast.

Solid football player. Not a big guy but a tough runner and a great receiver. Really fast.

loved seeing him play, he was IMHO a legit SEC back-but too msall to be an every down guy-NOT like Hester at all, SM was quick and shifty, as said above like Holliday- I think he would have played more had he not enjoyed him some major cannibas-but then again maybe that was part of why he was so good..A&M run and catch in 1986..wow...Guidry to Sammy turned game around and lead us to home upset over #3 A&M...Hodson;s first game as a player...he and W davis became stars that night..

Good enough to make it in the NFL. Although not for long he made it never the less. So that should pretty much answer your question. He was a fun to watch very explosive and fast as lighting. Some called him "White Lighting". Okay, I may have made that up but it sounded good

dude could fly, good hands too, didn't he spend a couple of years with the Pats/Colts?

Played against him in high school, he was a one man wrecking crew for De La Salle and was a good player at LSU.

...the pass was actually from Mickey Guidry...he was in at the time for his obligatory set of downs.

I was just a young fan then, but I remember Sammy Martin looked freaking 40 when he was in college. If I remember right, he was already going bald.

...he sure did look old. But, was really a nice guy.

He was a speed demon.
Not a big guy or a tackle-breaker, but if he found a seam, if was off to the races.
He played 4 or 5 years in the NFL.
Nothing in common with Hester- 2 completely different sizes, speeds, and running styles.

And of course, the running back he is compared to .... is the only other white guy at RB since the 1960s.

He had an incredible run against Ole Miss in Jackson one night. He scored a touchdown from about nine yards out, but there's no telling how many yards he actually covered with all the back & forth, starts & stops. He was something to watch.
