Hitting Grand Isle next weekend. What's best rig up for live bait surf fishing? I've only used plastics in the past.

Carolina rig with live shrimp/croaker

Try Carolina rig, cork, etc until you find what they want

I prefer using a three way swivel (drop shot) over a Carolina rig. You can buy the swivels at Academy. Get the smallest ones they have.

all good advise...if you're fishing from a boat for large trout, free lining croaker is hard to beat...like the guys said...live shrimp under a cork or on a fish finder rig...slip an egg sinker on your main line heavy enough so the surf won't move it to much... tie on a swivel then a 18" - 30" of leader to a hook...you're going to catch some hardheads with fresh bait...

this. I usually catch way fewer hard heads like that too. Stop at Coastal Bait right before you get to the turn off of LA1

Pyramid weight works great in the surf on that set up. I mostly fish plastic in the surf though.

I haven't really had many chances to use the three way swivel in the surf but I've had good luck using it in my boat in deeper water when they're not hitting on the popping cork.
