Imagine if someone said this about keeping minorities out of white neighborhoods.
Because only white people are wealthy.
At least in NYC and SF, gentrification looks very diverse. And the problems caused by gentrification aren't about race, they're about poor people being displaced from where they've lived for decades, and about the neighborhood losing its character. There's a real loss.
With that said, I believe that gentrification is a natural economic process and I don't think it should be stopped. Gentrification occurs when people act freely in their own interests (people buying cheaper real estate and fixing it up). There's obviously nothing inherently wrong with that, even if it indirectly makes life harder for someone who's lived in the neighborhood much longer.

I think it's fair to say that the context of these quotes are about race. It was as the Essence festival afterall.

SF is one of the most segregated cities on earth. there are no black people to displace in SF

that's not a real loss, and the improvements of the area certainly make up for any perceived loss

By "character" do you mean crime and filth? I don't see that as a loss.
