I thinks they were before the show started. There was one episode where they tried to be FWBs.
I don't hold this show in such a high regard as everyone else. It annoyed me how shallow they were and nothing ever happened. I watched most of it during its run but don't really care to watch it on reruns unless it's like a super classic episode.
My favorite was the red dots episode.

Because they had a history and were bf/gf before the show started. But yes, they tried to have "this" and "that" but it didn't work out.
