and what would you propose, as a system, if you could change it all?
I would go back to the old system, with one caveat. I would devise a system, doesn't have to be via government, but some system, which can control the price gouging for services. Go look at what a hip replacement costs here vs. other developed countries.
The right will tell you that the cost is higher here because of lawsuits, but this is nonsense. Texas has had tort reform for years and health care costs have continued to rise.
The fact of the matter is that when you're sick, you're in no position to act as a consumer the way you were if you needed a new TV or a car. And furthermore the system is intentionally obscured from the patient so that nobody really knows how much everything is going to cost. Try asking your surgeon what it's going to run you, he probably doesn't know.
The system as a whole needs to be reformed, but i don't think government is the answer, in fact if we had smaller government in this particular field it would be more likely to be successful, as crony capitalism has and will continue to destroy the republic in the wake of Citizens United.

Is this you caring or not caring about what happens in other countries? I can't tell.

Good post. It's amazing that you are such an Obamabot/apologist yet hold such a fundamental disagreement on the role of government. One is left wondering if youre a little touched in the head.

THAT'S THE PROBLEM, AMIGO.
ETA: Sorry for the all caps. But for real, I can provide literature that isn't the nonsensical pontification of ill-defined buzzwords that I'm sure you've gotten used to from the likes of Krugman and Chomsky. I'm getting sick of reading your non-Econ problem solving on here.

Smaller gov't will always destroy crony capitalism. That's really not up for debate.
