I live about 30 miles from Ft Polk (Leesville), about 10 years ago they did some nighttime exercises and had some kind of light source that could light up an entire battlefield, for hours. Plenty of UFO calls were put into the local newspapers. Sounds pretty similar to what you are describing.

There is a guy who is on C2C a few times a week with updates and this sounds alot like some of his updates.
