Cliff's notes:

Female cashier sold a guy $1300 in cigarettes - guy used a stolen credit card.

Pakistani owned business - family from New Jersey.

Owner telling her she owes them $1300.

She believes she owes this and it trying to work out a payment arrangement.

I told her to get it in writing - why she owes them $1300 and what payment plan they suggest.

She understands that they're basically telling her to pay for the merchandise or lose her job. I told her to get everything in writing before she pays them a dime.

Opinions?

Shitty situation. If she followed protocol for her job then she's not liable for a damned thing. However, if she didn't follow the appropriate procedures associated with a credit card purchase (asking for identification for example) then she may be asked to pay it back or lose her job. I'd say frick you anyway and leave

$1300 of cigarettes? Someone is in on the cigarette smuggling black market here in NYC. A pack will run you $13-15. Get bulk prices, make a killing.

I don't know anything about the legality, but no way I would pay that. That doesn't sound right at all.
