Surface Pro 2 external monitor problem

I have a Surface Pro 2 connected through a docking station to an AOC 27" external monitor. Frequently (about 50 % of the time) after the Surface has been in sleep mode, the external monitor is no longer recognized when the Surface is reactivated. Also this happens on initial boot from time to time.
I can usually get it to recognize the monitor after trying one of the following. 1. reboot several times. 2. Undock the Surface and re-dock. 3. Unplug connection cords and re-plug them.
When connected to the Surface not using the docking station, this problem disappears.
Any ideas on what might be happening would be appreciated.
Thanks for any and all input.

This is a bug in the system. I have seen the same problem with windows coming back from sleep mode on most any laptop or tablet device. All you can do is undock it, let it reorient and put it back in. BTW, windows sucks...

I hope it has a warranty.

Look for updated Windows 8 drivers for your docking station. I had similar problems with a plugable[sic] docking station. Updating drivers resolved my issues.
