Heat is a major issue. Why are they playing at 1 and 5 local time? Why not something like 4 and 8? It would also help out US viewers who are the only ones that matter. Whether it be the World Cup, Olympics, etc.

My guess would be they're keeping the European audience in mind

These times allow for them to watch live.

US viewers definitely aren't the only ones who matter when a billion people watch

Euro audiences get the prime time slots at this stage and beyond, which is fair considering the viewership numbers across the pond.

The last match of the day in the first 2 rounds of group play started late for them tho.

Brazil is also a couple of hours ahead of US time.

We're the only ones that matter when soccer is our 3rd-5th most popular game, but by far the rest of the world's most popular?

These times are actually pretty good for us here in the U.S. In 4 more years when the games are in Russia, it'll be much worse I'm sure.

Same reason the best SEC game gets slotted into the 3:30 ET CBS slot.

As I found out the other day, its an attempt to juggle both hemispheres. That said, we'll be wishing we had this time slot over the next 8 years. I hate that because the WC is obviously taking off in the US and I wouldn't be surprised if we see a huge drop off over the next 2 World Cups.
