I'm 100% serious. Care to prove anything I said wrong? Bet you can't.

How about this:
quote:

They don't realize that the machine is carrying the momentum for them. Hell, you stop moving on the elliptical and it keeps on going. Why is that? Because it's a freaking momentum machine, that's it. Hell, you have to force it to stop so you can get off of it.

Ellipticals are not "momentum machines"...a term you made up BTW. As to how you burn calories on an elliptical...well, they have resistance settings as well as incline settings. Resistance being the key word here. Resistance is what takes away the momentum a body builds up while in motion. That momentum has to be replaced constantly, hence the user constantly replenishes the momentum using their muscles.

...but someone as fit as you understands how muscles work, right?

I stand by my earlier statement. Your earlier pseudo-scientific post is an abortion. I'm dumber for having read it. May God have mercy on your soul.

Elliptical machines are useless and carry momentum just as I stated. If they worked, you'd see them used in physical therapy. I work in a hospital, out PT doesn't have a single one. I even discussed this with the Dr. in detail. People make little to no gains on them, proven fact. Yes they have resistance settings, doesn't mean people are using them. Free weights are and always will be the better route, go learn something and stop trying so hard.

Why would I replace an aerobic exercise with free weights?

Because free weights build muscle and burn as much if not more calories.

There are better options but elliptical machines are not useless.

I'm not sure many people get on ellipticals to build muscle just like they don't run on a treadmill to build muscle. It's usually about aerobic exercise.

because if you're workout is primarily cardio, you will give up before you reach your goals. It doesn't burn fat as effectively. You are only burning while your heart rate is increased. The instant you stop, levels are back to normal.
When lifting weights, you are breaking down muscle fibers, which takes up to 3 days to repair and rebuild. During this 3 days, you have dramatically increased protein synthesis which in turns boost metabolic rate. During this time, your body is using energy to rebuild what you have damaged. If you are calorie deficient, your body will then use stored energy (fat) to repair the damage.

You're not going to build muscle just from lifting weights. You have to feed the body in order to do so. People don't get muscular by accident.

Ellipticals are great for overweight people to begin with however stairmasters are the best.... treadmills suck because well there is no resistance vs outside running

So let me get this straight.
This guy hates on fatties for being fat, then hates on fatties for trying to not be fat?
Nice.

How many people do you even know with fitbits? I know two people with fitbits. They're a couple and they run ironman triathlons.

Lean cuisines and diet soda are marketed to fat people who need to lose weight. Are you surprised that fit people don't buy them?

And are you seriously implying that ecigs are a health trend? Ecigs are popular because smokers can smoke them wherever they want, not because people think they're good for you.

Eh I've had incline at 8 and can still do a 8min mile but when I run I'm still at 9min mile

When I decide to stop running, my momentum carries me for a few more yards. Holy crap. I've been wasting all my time.

I don't get the hate for people trying to change their life around. Personally I am one of the people that would get shamed by some of the posters in this thread. However I'm trying to turn my life around, I've lost 45 pounds since March

Good job. You should start posting in the putheforkdown thread on the food and drink board.

This is just some mental problem of your own. You're either exaggerating the difference or else you're buying into the myth that treadmill running requires less effort than over-ground running and it's affecting you mentally like a placebo. I guess it could also be that you can't handle the increased impact on your joints from running outside vs a treadmill that supplies some cushion, but that's not a factor of increased effort or fitness.

Unless you're running directly into a strong wind or running something ridiculous like 5 minute miles (and apparently you're not), then the air resistance is basically negligible.

Running on a treadmill with no incline is basically the same as running on a flat track. If you're running on the street, there is some increased effort, not because of air resistance, but because of natural elevation changes. An incline of 1-2% on the treadmill is probably more than enough for this for most flattish places (like Louisiana).
