The extra 25 grains helps the FOC of longer arrows.
I thought shorter arrows needed more help with FOC.
And to the OP, I shoot Rage for now.
Can't seem to tune my setup for fixed heads properly.
I would rather have the dependabilaty and no moving parts of a fixed blade, but as a side effect, the Rage does cut a huge wound.
GREAT bloodtrail.

Rage extreme chistle tip or rage hypodermic, both in 2 blade 100 grain.

All things equal, a longer arrow will have a lower FOC.
Longer arrows also have a weaker spine, therefore forcing you to shoot (for example) a .300 spine rather than a .340 spine (to achieve a proper tune). This adds to the overall weight lowering the FOC even further.

I'm going to make another attempt to shoot fixed heads, but if I have to shoot mechanical, I like the way Rage's open.
I think the banana peal opening ones take some of the energy to open the blades.
I may be wrong, but that's how I see it.

quote:I have short arms and do not max out my bow. My Steelheadds sink just as deep in the tree behind the deer as my old Muzzys and Thunderheads did. I have seen no loss in anything and a gain in accuracy. No odd fliers either.

Resurrecting this thread because I've been giving some thought on switching from the fixed heads that I've been shooting to the Grim Reaper Trocar tip broadhead. Anybody want to talk me out of this or help fuel my decision to swap?

Used to shoot thunderhead 100's. heard too many horror stories of people shooting mechanicals, rage included, and having them not expand on impact. Of course, you hit the deer in the right spot and it should do the trick. I'd just rather not have to wait for the blade to open...

Expandable fixed heads are obsolete
False.
I dare you to try to shoot an expandable through an elk shoulder plate.
I'm not arguing against the carnage that an expandable can produce. I've seen the blood trails, I know the damage. However, any time you have moving parts, you are setting yourself up for the chance of failure. That chance may be small, but its still there. When I'm on a hunt, I try to remove every variable I can. I've heard lots of stories and even seen alot of firsthand examples of blades not opening, low penetration, broken blades, blades opening in flight and throwing off arrow flight, etc., etc.
Broadhead choice is one of those "to each his own" kind of things. The truth is any modern broadhead on the market can kill a deer or other game animal. Each type has its drawbacks. I would not at all consider fixed blades obsolete. Personally I just want something that has 100% dependability, so I shoot a fixed blade cut-on-contact broadhead. I want all 100% of my kinetic energy delivered into whatever I shoot.
Murphy's law. If it can go wrong it will. I try not to give it the chance.
