You will need a 7.1 receiver that has multi-room capability.

ETA: I misread your post. Just get the cheapest 5.1 Yamaha, Denon, etc you can find at Best Buy or Amazon.

2.1 would be way, way better for his application. I wouldn't even hook up a sub, so it would really be a 2.0 system. Surround sound in a dedicated theater room, otherwise just buy a stereo.
