Im assuming that registered Dems aren't allowed to vote in Republican primaries?
Party registration is not required in MS, so that isn't the issue.
However, you're only allowed to vote in ONE party's primary, not one party's primary and then the other party's primary runoff.
The allegation is that a lot of people who voted in the Dem primary also voted in the Republican runoff, which is against state law and makes for an invalidated vote.

Miss doesn't register by party. Dems can vote in a GOP primary or runoff as long as they didn't vote in the Dem primary (or runoff) and vice versa.

Regardless as to registration, you can vote in the primary of the opposing party.
It is my understanding there are two elements to this;
- You cannot vote in the primary of both parties (e.g. cannot vote in the Democratic primary and the Republican primary - apparently this was widespread).
- You cannot vote in a runoff if you did not vote in the preceding primary (not as sure about this).

Ethically, you should not vote in the Republican runoff as a Republican if you plan to vote Democratic in the General. Not illegal though, plus unenforceable!
35,000 is an exaggeration I believe. Probably more like 10,000.
Ironic, to me anyway, is if the Democrats that did vote and put Cochran over did themselves a disservice. I think Childers would have had a better shot against McDaniel than Cochran. JMO
