Cholesterol: is hdl of 38 bad if total cholesterol is <100?

A Hypo Dermic Lateral of 38 is fine. Just watch it doesn't go into the negative.

It is low. You want to get it up to at least 60 if possible. Just a few dietary changes and a decent exercise routine can make a huge difference.

Low HDL isn't necessarily bad. It's just that high HDL (>50) is protective against heart disease.

your ratio is still good so not immediate concern. Like others have said, you really want that number >50.

Mine over a period of years held consistent at 111-140 total with 58-62 HDL.

In the end, its all genetics.
