Networking windows 7 32bit to run a DOS point of sale program

Our business runs an old dos application as our point of sale software, and I just upgraded our three boxes from windows 95 200mhz dinosaurs. Strangely enough the dinosaurs seemed to be a bit faster as far as running the software off of the "main" computer.
The new systems have gigabit Ethernet cards running off of a gigabit switch. 2gb ram intel core duo 2ghz. Any IT gurus have any tips on speeding up my network as speed is necessary to get us through some rushes without pulling out our hair?
In windows the new computers are lightning fast compared to what we had before, but it seems that the DOS emulation is too slow for our liking. Any ideas on speeding it up?

Google Windows 7 DOS compatibility mode.
Google DOSbox - DOS emulator for multiple platforms. (Although mostly used for playing old DOS games),
Best answer: Upgrade your POS software. Running 20 year POS DOS based software on 20 year old Windows 95 platform I'm surprised no one hacked your entire system.

Jesus.
Does that PoS system even translate to excel or quickbooks?

It helps that it isn't online as far as the hacking goes, and we are pursuing upgrading the software this winter as it wouldn't be too prudent to do so right now in the midst of our busiest season.
Everything seems to run fine as far as compatibility goes, it's just slower than I expected what with the tremendous upgrade in ram and processing power. I may have to revert to the old machines until we get the upgrade in software. Bleh.

Wow. I can't imagine how big a pain in the arse that would be to audit.

I could be wrong but DOS is only going to use up to like 640kb of memory no matter if you have 128GB in the machine. Someone will correct me on that, but the point is real.
Now you're running that same software in a non-native environment. I don't see the performance dropping dramatically, but I also don't see where performance would be gained.

Immensely a pain.
I'd like a login system to the program and not mapped drives running multiple instances of the program as there is a lot of file rebuilding from corrupting of files, but this is how they've always done it thus far.
Hell I'm open to suggestions for a new PoS if anyone has any. It's a single store with about 1000 stock items listed by manufacturer. It's pertinent we use key codes for inventory as the items are too big for a barcode system. Also we have to be able to insert custom lines quite frequently for items like replacement windows, doors, or just plain special order items.

Are you against a cloud based system..?
Feel free to @gmail me, I installed/customized POS systems at my previous job, and the guys still there are very knowledgeable

No reason why your POS software should run slower under Windows 7 on newer hardware.
One thing that comes to mind is where temporary working files are stored.
Could it be that on the old systems these were locally stored and now on the network drive?
As an option you can try vDos (LINK /) .
It won’t speed up anything, but the DOS experience under Windows could surprise you.
