Seriously- have you checked the neutral switch on the Ranger? It shouldn't have started in gear like that for exactly the potential accident that happened here.
I don't have a Polaris, but we have a Deere and Kawasaki CVT (belt) transmission vehicles here and both of them WILL NOT start unless the shifter is in Neutral. Same goes for Kubota's RTVs as well.
This is NOT your daughters fault. Hug her and be thankful no one got hurt. There's a reason neutral switches are installed, and y'all just found out why.

All is well. Better than well. I sat her down and talked to her, told her I loved her. Asked her if she was scared. Explained to her how dangerous it could have been. Then she took a bath, found a shirt that she sleeps in that says "I (heart) my ------, because he's my dad", then asked my wife if she would go get me to lay with her as she goes to sleep, which of course I did.
