Scoring in the first minute couldn't have been better for the sport.

A common topic brought up by novice fans of soccer is the limited amount of scoring. Getting that goal in 30 seconds kept people watching and engaged for the next 94 minutes.
Outside of winning, this was the best thing that happened for the growing the casual fanbase in the US.

IDK. I will say scoring goals was good, but USA stopped playing attacking football after the goal and I think that could be negative.

I see what your saying but it kept people interested:
- I want to see when they score next
is way better than:
- Let me know when we finally get on the board.

True.

I think the late winner is more important.
The early goal was better for that game, but the lat e winner will have the game in the news for a couple of days and there to be a bigger buzz for the next one

Not really.

I suppose there is a lot of nuance in the game that is difficult to appreciate if you are unfamiliar with the sport. Kind of like gaining just enough yards to punt and flip field position in football. There is importance there, but it can be difficult to notice.

It was magical. I was serving drinks and the bar just exploded.

Exactly. That's why casual fans of Baseball love the HR, football the long TD passes or kickoff returns, and dunks in basketball.
Casual fans of soccer want to see scoring. And they got that immediately yesterday.

What do you think it was, then?

That first goal didn't make anyone keep watching more than the would have normally. For the casual fans, it just became more of the same, as the game went on without any scoring for the majority.
Even if there wasn't a score so early on, people would have watched the game because it was the first game and it was hyped up tremendously.
I really don't think this game made any difference with casual fans.

Nope, I disagree.

One early goal is not going to make a difference for casual fans, which are the ones we are talking about, when the rest of the game played out just like most other games.

It kept people interested because they knew there was the possibility of another goal.
Had it been 0-0 into the 81st minute, I'd wager the in-game TV ratings would have dropped by halftime.

I disagree. The first goal was scored before a lot of people got home from work at least in the central time zone. From 1 minute to 85 they had to watch us get outplayed and over matched. Also, the constant talk of our players being tired, exhausted, injured, etc. sixty minutes into the game got old real quick.

Why? How does basically starting a game 1-0 make people think there will be a greater possibility of another goal? If anything, there is LESS a chance of another goal.

Maybe so. But I can just as easily see people having the mindset of: Well yea we got that early goal, but it's been 45 minutes so far and there has been nothing since. I don't know if I want to keep watching. We will probably win 1-0.
Don't get me wrong, I think this game helped soccer for the US due to the game as a whole:
-opening game of the world cup
-hyped tremendously
-new faces on the team, no Landon, etc.
-early score
-losing the lead late and showing the ability to come back at the end and win
-big "rival" in Ghana
-winning a basically must-win game
So yes it helped, but I don't think it was simply because of the early goal.
