The one that got away

I remember we were fishing out of venice out west and got lucky and I caught a 450 lb blue not even 2 minutes after putting baits out. We make a pass around a rig and the port outrigger goes off. A large marlin over 600 lbs is greyhounding for 20 seconds. He pulls out 250 yards of line against 27 pounds of drag. I put the rod in the fighting chair for a rookie. He proceeds to lose the fish in less than 30 seconds because he accidently puts the reel in free spool and the fish spits the hook. I was some pissed. Oh well that's fishing. What story you got?

Lost a big tarpon from my yak in mobile bay. Would have been my first and only tarpon. I didn't have a chance. He ran 75 yards in about 4 seconds and wrapped me up in a crab trap line.

What rod and reel were you using?

Fishing timbalier last year for the oilman's hooked on to a monster trout. When he came sideways just under the surface my buddies and I started screaming. The fricker went on a dive to the bottom on me and straight popped brand new 15# mono. He was easily a 6+ trout.

Fishin at Toledo two years ago. It was in early March and we'd just had a cold front come through and it was 27 degrees when we launched that mornin.
It was slow fishin, but I'd caught three bass, the smallest about 3 pounds. I was slow Rollin a spinnerbait in 5-8 ft of water. I kept the boat in the depth I wanted, and was casting straight in front of me and reeling back.
I felt two solid bumps on the spinnerbait and set the hook. Rod bowed a little and it took off straight to the boat. The wind was blowin pretty good and was blowin me straight towards the fish, and I was reelin as fast as I could just to keep tension on the line.
It finally got to the boat, and when it came up it took my breath away! I just stammered "get the net" to my buddy, and he said "Holy shite!" I led her around the left side of the boat, and she was just swimming right on top right to my buddy. She was almost to him and she turned her head straight up and opened her mouth, spinnerbait shot out, he dove at her with the net and got about a foot of her arse in and she flipped out and swam straight under the boat.
It still haunts me, because I know that bass was AT LEAST 10 pounds, but probable closer to 12. My buddy always says she looks like she had swallowed a beach ball.

I caught a nice 7-8 lb catfish last weekend. Placed it in the fish basket and tied it off to the dock. That evening, my Dad was going t oclean the fish for supper. He was transitioning the fish to a 5 gal bucket. Catfish flopps as he is taking it out of the basket right back into the lake. Me and my brother had fun giving him a hard time.
My real heartbreaker - Tarpon fishing in Tampa Bay, hooked into a tarpon for the first time, fought him for a little bit and then he spit the hook out - That is the first, last, and only time I have had a tarpon on the line.

About 15 years ago, I was around 13 years old. My only tuna fishing trip ever out of Venice. Caught 5 or 6 blacks on the lumps untill we finally hooked a big Yellow. My brother and I took turns fighting it for about 45 minutes when the captain says damn that's the rod I didn't tie the good knot on. Not 5 minutes later the fish came off and the line was curly at the end like the knot slipped.

# 1 Lake Fork about 3 years ago, fishing with my brother, and 15 yo cousin, ripping a crank over a steep point. Had been catching a few slot fish, 16"-24" so nice fish. Never felt the fish hit it, just lots of pressure, let the rod load and keep it tight. She heads for deep water and Im working her, probably one of the longest fights for a bass. Finally get her in sight and she is massive, biggest bass I have seen massive, easily 10+. Now is a good time to mention I forgot the net in the truck...
I'm all over the boat, stepping on shite, front deck, back deck, middle, just a shite show I was so excited. Finally get her wore out and she lays up, I get down to lip her, she looks at me, and gives one more jerk of the head and pop, out comes the crank. I all but dove in the water after her, finally gave up and just sat on the deck for a solid 5 mins. Get my shite back together and re-tie my knot, that big bitch straightened out my trebble hook, not just a little, I mean straight. Damnedest thing I ever saw, at least it made me feel better, equipment failure, not operator error I guess.
#2 was fighting a big bull red off the jetties that open into the gulf. Fought for probably 30 mins, had to chase him with the boat, strong bastard. He ends up wrapping me up on something, and I cant move him anymore. Guide buddy tries, I try, nothing will get it loose, had to cut him off. Never saw him, but my buddy says would have probably been the biggest one he has seen the way it fought.

I caught an enormous Spanish Mackeral at East Tim, we thought it was a kingfish at first. Was holding him and he started struggling and I squeezed tighter and he starting shitting all over, so I threw him back in the water. Just for shits and grins, when I got home, I looked up the state record for Spanish... It's 10lbs and some change. My fish was easily over 12lbs. I mean who knows the state record for trash fish species off the top of their head?

Right at the mouth of the bay?

Not really the "one"...more like the "three". I lost three 60-80lb Bluefin Tuna last summer before I realized that the Blackwater Mono that I was using was rotten. Once I got re-spooled the bite was off. That would have made for some tasty steaks.

Fishing the big bass tourney so it makes it even more painful. At siepe fishing a high spot in the boat lane with a rig. I get hung in some brush. The brush stats giving way and I'm dragging it with my weight. using a really long leader.
After dragging the top for about 10 yards, I start feeling a tug. It then becomes obvious that a fish has found my lizard as I was dragging the top.
Fish eventually breaks free and I'm fighting it for a bit. We both decide it's a huge goo. When I get the fish close by, I still need it to be netted. Partener is at the side of the boat looking down. Fish pulls off right at the boat. Partner looks up at me with eyes as big as golf balls. "It was a bass". Bitch was huge.

Man that sucks....and that fish would've been worth a lot of money.

Fishing at Chicot Lake last year. I hook something big. I would reel it in within 5 feet of the boat and then the fish would go on a run pulling out drag. It kept doing this and my buddy is standing ready with the net. I fight the fish for 15 minutes and my crank bait flies out. I'm pissed. I look at the crank bait and both treble hooks are straighten out. I never saw the fish. It could have been a huge gar, gator, or a bass. Maybe it is a good thing I did not see it especially if it was a bass.

Fishing Red River pool 5 last year i kept catching a glance at this stump that just looked different than the rest. Threw a June Bug Senko right next to it and WHAM! I set the hook with all 150lbs i have. She immediately jumps straight up, shakes her big ole head at me and throws the hook.
Had to be a 10lb'er and as long as my leg.

I've had some huge noseeums in the Red. Always assumed huge spotted cats. One in particular I would have liked to have seen. I could do nothing with it. I just kept even pressure on it and followed it with the trolling motor. Eventually pulled off.

Had a nice 6-7 lb trout on in Gorillaville. Would be my personal best. Good buddy who doesn't fish ran up and tried to stab the net under her. Hits her right in the mouth and she fades away to the green abyss.
All I said was "Bring me the net." He thought he was gonna help. She was wore out and I could have easily drug her into the net.

One time I was fishing in Delacroix on a windy Friday afternoon. Paddling my arse off, trying to keep position, chasing the elusive redfish.
Got pulled up to this killer looking cut, cast that gold spoon straight down the pipe and started to work it.
Right when I got near the clump of grass at the end of the cut, I felt a few bumps on the spoon, pants got tight as frick and the breathing became erratic.
As soon as I pulled the spoon out of the water to re-cast, that little 6" copper bastard lunged out of the water and barely missed the hook.
That was all she wrote.
