It's not a tough conclusion to draw with his description - she's involved in drugs, has a sketchy background, boyfriend about to get out of jail, etc. OP was being set up or cased for something - they can't "steal" land, even if they knocked him off - he's not married, so blackmail would be tough, unless she decided to cry rape. With her background and her associates, cops are going to believe Joe Citizen.

But, if they could have cajoled him into letting them use his country place for a while - they threatened him with going to the cops after they leave a bunch of evidence of illegal activity - that could have been the hook - or simply they wanted a place to cook meth/grow weed.
