"Towelroot" comes from noted XDA developer Geohot, and according to him, the simple one-click APK root will absolutely work on the AT&T and Verizon Galaxy S5, the AT&T Galaxy S4 Active, and the Nexus 5. Just install the downloadable app, tap "make it ra1n," and wait. Support for the AT&T and Verizon variants of the Galaxy Note 3 has not been verified, but might be possible. [Editor's note: we tried it on a stock AT&T Note 3 with no success.] In fact, Geohot claims that any Android device with a kernel built before June 3rd (anything running 4.4.2 or lower, basically) should theoretically be rooted by Towelroot.
Definitely invited: AT&T GS5, Verizon GS5, GS4 Active, Nexus 5
May have some troubles at the door but invited: AT&T/Verizon Note 3
Possibly invited: Every Android phone with a kernel build date < Jun 3
Geohot notes that applying this root to a Samsung device with the Knox security system in place will almost certainly void your warranty, but if you want root that bad, you probably don't care. Anyone having issues can contact the creator directly atgeohot@gmail.com, and he is gracefully accepting PayPal donations at the Towelroot website.

I'm gonna try it on a galaxy s4 (att) with nc1 this afternoon...

I did it on my at&t Note 3 and it worked fine. I have root access. Downloaded Busybox and SuperSU. It's probably the easiest root method I've ever seen. You literally just download the APK, run it and you have root.

Going to root my s5 once I get to the hotel

Dammit, didn't work for my ZTE, which apparently has some new fancy bootlocker.

Newb here.. they're exploiting the kernel to gain root privileges correct?
Isn't it weird that it's that vulnerable, all the time?

Supposedly works with other devices too

It worked perfectly on ATT GS4 with NC1. Easiest root so far. Just flashed Hyperdrive ROM and its working great.

So it unlocks the bootloader as well? I don't have these phones, why I'm asking.

No, it just allows you to gain root access. But once you have root, you can get a custom recovery and possibly unlock your bootloader without wiping your device, depending on what type you have. I have an att note 3, and the bootloader is locked down tight. The only possibility I have is to install SafeStrap and go from there. Of Course the only ROMs available to me are ROMs based on the touchwiz kernal.

I have only had an S4 so I have no idea what there is other than touchwiz. I guess ignorance is bliss in this case because I see people bitching about touchwiz all the time.
I did download the Google Experience Launcher last night, and I am going to play with that today. It is pretty cool so far.

Woaaaah.
Does this mean I can finally put a custom rom on my S4Active?
Please god say yes, I HATE touchwiz.

No, you're still stuck on Touchwiz.

But you can put custom roms on it with safestrap, right? Or is the Active locked tighter than the S4?
I still have new clue what is wrong with touchwiz.
