I thought we were talking about Putin seizing Crimea?

Though MAD pretty much nullifies the threat of direct global conflict between so called super powers
I can't help but be reminded of Germany's "annexation" of Austria in 36(I think that's right). Then Czechoslavakia which the same rationale being used to justify it then is being used now with an ethnic population quota...50%. Then he took the rest of Czechoslavakia, then Poland, Norway
What's to stop Putin from igniting and finding separatist movements with the same justification?

He doesn't "hold" Ukraine now. I'm not sure I understand how you made the leap from my comment that Russia now has the Crimea to Putin holding Ukraine.
If you mistyped your thought & meant to say Putin won't hold the Crimea this time next year, wanna bet?

The whole of Ukraine has strong historical ties to Russia. Why don't you look into the origins of modern Slavic nations. What the frick is your point? Obviously Putin hasn't taken all of Ukraine.

Of course that was my main point. And sure, I'll bet.

You're betting the Crimea will not be de facto part of Russia one year from today, right?
If so, you're on.
If so, you're on.

The Kiev Rus. Historically, they are intrinsically linked. It's irrelevant though. Austria/Germany. Seizing territories, especially post WWII and CW is incredibly alarming. Hitler didn't take all of Czechoslavakia. Just the outer portions with Germans populating the area, which was bullshite. He wanted the industrial plants and coal. They appeased him, then he took the rest.
Hasn't taken all of Ukraine/Ukrainians are Russians
Irrelevant

Name your price, Drugh (forum wouldn't let me post ). If I'd taken a bet from you a couple of years ago, you might still be banned. I wouldn't have the same mercy on you that I did on an invalid like Bengal.
Eta: Board wouldn't let me post modern Cyrillic.

What?

I like you, Navy, but I'll back Russian on this one. How will Russia lose Crimea within the next 12 months? What are you seeing?

How are we to do this online? Would you be comfortable with a donation to a charity of your choice? That's typically my preference. Even informal bets of this kind online are a bit murky, legally. Especially for certain people.

Putin will withdraw under pressure. It will ultimately cost what it's worth. When I place a bet, I'm not saying it's 100%. There are a lot of factors in play. I'd put it at 70, though.

No, thanks. I'll take cash.

Then I reject your offer. I don't send "cash" in the mail, don't do money orders, and won't go out of my way to travel to Louisiana to give it to you (though I should be home for a couple of games next fall).
You should know that this kind of bet is more about demonstrating conviction that personal gain.

I'm agreeing with your point (I think) about the early formation of Slavic nations and the history of Russia, and the Ukraine. Muscovites were the successors to the Kiev Rus' It's pretty much the same fricking thing
as to the rest of my point, I'm pointing out that the appeasement policy that didn't work on Hitler won't work on Putin and the nationalities and ethnic makeup are irrelevant as they were then. Austria is to Germany as Ukraine is to Russia. But what does it fricking matter? Putin is expanding territories. he's tested the waters and the line of thinking I've been reading is the same philosophy that doomed the free world in the early 20th century.
It's the same fricking thing. Only he's using the Milosevic tactic of pawning responsibility off on local militia separatists. He's not going to stop here...there is nothing historically to suggest otherwise.

Pressure from whom? Trying to see what I'm missing bc I'd put your stance at a 20% chance instead of a 70%.

from the ninnies telling him he's on the wrong side of history. People like putin really respond to meaningless rhetoric
I guess Romney is the Winston Churchill in this instance. He fricking nailed it.

Barometric pressure. I hear it's terrible in Eurasia during the summer months.
