it's not the attorneys. Do you really think they want to listen to some whining female complaining about how hubs doesn't wash the kids' clothes, he sleeps with his GF while they are in his custody, blah, blah, blah? It's always the clients being unreasonable that increases the costs. The men are typically pissed that they have to give up all that money, that they busted their arse to make; and the women think the man should continue to pay for their lifestyle even after they are divorced.
This. This. This.
My wife (no pic) is a divorce attorney. I get the pleasure of hearing about all the cases. Sure, there are meter maid attorneys out there but I'd say a good majority of attorney's want to seek a decent resolution for their client and move on. With the amount of divorces today there is plenty of business to be had and lingering cases just increase the workload.
Most clients are just unreasonable. Some of it is about money but most of it is about control. There's a lot of "he can't do this, or I'm going to make him do that." Lot of vengeance. Most of all a whole lot of babysitting.
Oh, and you guys would be surprised at how often divorce attorney's get stiffed on the bill. It does not matter the financial status of the client, in fact, the wealthier they are the worse it is. My wife had one client walk in and start striking things off the bill saying "I am not paying for this, or this, or this. This is what you will be paid." I told her to take the chump to collections. Eff him. She didn't give up her weekend prepping for his court date for nothing. She's getting paid.

Well, they didn't get wealthy by paying retail.

maybe, but possibly the attorney is so used to the client unilaterally accepting their strategy without question, that when someone does question, or suggest a different way, they're being unreasonable, I've had to do a fair amount of educating attorneys over the years, and I'm not a law school prof.

you'd also be surprised at the gross padding of the bill that takes place, not only billing for time not spent on the case or full rates for multi-tasking, but billing clerical work, not done by the attorney, or requiring an attorney(fed-exing, photo copying, etc.,) at full attorney rates, a person would be a fool not to scrutinize and challenge things like this
