The divorce rate isn't 50%, btw. The methodology is flawed. The 50% number comes from taking all marriages performed in a single year and comparing them to all divorces in that same year, without regard to when the marriages occurred. It is a complete distortion. Also, another interesting fact about the divorce rate is if you exclude divorces by people who have already had one divorce (so-called serial divorcers) the actual rate of divorce drops to around 6-10%. Which means that some partners account for a disproportional amount of divorces, aka the jerk effect.
