Yea they are great for docs because:
1) you don't want people having your actual cell phone number
2) they can be passed to the next person on shift
3) they get signals in hospitals, where a lot of cell phones don't.
I guess the only alternative would be a cell phone, but a hospital isn't gonna pay for that when the pagers do all you need them too when there are phones all over a hospital to use.

This. I pack a pager and a business cell when I am on duty, in addition to my personal cell.
