Tell you what, if Canelo beats Lara next month...I'd LOVE to see Cotto-Canelo.

Cotto-Golovkin?
Freddie Roach won't allow that to happen.

Cotto looked great. I don't want to take any credit away from him, but did he look that good solely because Martinez is done or has Roach really rejuvinated Cotto that much?
And Sergio was in his corner begging for one more round. Respect for that considering the beating he was taking.

I think Cotto's dominance tonight is because Sergio is finished. That's the reason they took the fight....but I thought Sergio had a lot more left in him that what he showed tonight. He should go ahead and retire.
However, Freddie Roach has definitely reinstalled that beast mode in Cotto that he didn't have post-Margarito. Cotto has a lot of options now after this big win.

quote:Exactly. Even against Mayweather, when Cotto fought really well IMO, he didn't have anywhere near the same speed, combinations, or confidence as he had tonight.

I think tonight is more a result of Cotto's skill than Martinez being washed up. Cotto's dominance made Martinez look washed up; not the other way around.

I'm glad he settled on a great trainer. For a good bit of his prime he was switching trainers and/or had a lot of drama is his camp because of personality clashes within it.

No way of knowing since Martinez knee was shot from the beginning. I even think that it was always hurt. Cotto fought a good fight but lets not put too much weight behind this win. Congrats to Cotto.

That just looked like a set up for a rematch to me.

WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32KOs) will return to action on December 6th or December 13th, according to Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum. Cotto will be back at New York's Madison Square Garden or a venue in Las Vegas. The Puerto Rican fighter made history on Saturday night at MSG, when he stopped Sergio Martinez in ten rounds to become the first boxer from Puerto Rico to win four world titles in four weight divisions.
"We have nothing definite, we'll talk about it soon, but it is best to return on December 6th or the 13th, here in the Garden or is Las Vegas if the opponent is a Mexican," said Arum.
There are many options for Cotto, with former WBC/WBA 154-pound champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez as one of the biggest fights to be made, should Canelo defeat Erislandy Lara on July 12th in Las Vegas.

Won't be easy to do. I'm looking forward to this fight.

quote:To be honest, if Canelo fights aggressively (which he's doing less and less often IMO), I think it will be easy for him to beat Lara. If Angulo's power took Lara to the brink, imagine what Canelo will do to him! That said, if Alvarez tries to make it a technical fight, Lara will obviously have a chance. He's very skilled.

Dammit, just when I start to like Cotto again, you go and remind me that Bob Arum promotes him. I hate just about everything associated with that man.

I could be wrong here but I don't think Cotto is under contract with Top Rank. I believe he only signs one-fight deals these days and nothing long term.
