Can someone compare these two like they're talking to a drooling idiot?
I have cable and an Iphone 4 but I want to occasionally stream youtube, netflix, music etc. and I don't want to spend a whole lot since I mostly just watch sports and movies. TIA.

While both are capable devices and worth their respective price tags, I personally liked the Roku a bit better—it offers a bit more out of the box for an extra $15. You get apps on the device, a remote, more content choices, and pretty much all the streaming capabilities you'd want in a tiny little package. Most importantly, however, you get choice. If you like remotes, you get a remote. If you like controlling with your smartphone, you can use that instead. The Chromecast costs a bit less, though, and if you like streaming stuff from your mobile device, it might be the ideal choice for you instead.

I have the Roku in my bedroom and the Chromecast hooked up the my xbox1 in the living room
Chromecast is the better device now that WatchESPN has been added. The only thing missing for me now is Amazon Instant Video which I rarely use.
The ease of use with the phone is much better. The remote is a negative and it is much harder to search and find items. Also, chromecast takes no time to boot

i dont quite get this. it seems my chromecast has 'lite' apps or something because pandora on my phone <> the pandora i see on chromecast.
likewise, netflix will lock up on my phone sometimes and i've actually turned my phone completely off but its still playing just fine on the chromecast.
chromecast has to be doing more than simply pulling everything from your phone.

I can stream music I have locally to it if I need to..I use IHeart for streaming..
ESPN..?
I just use a direct usb drive when I want to watch a downloaded movie...
Other than that, yes..I get Amazon shows, Hulu Plus and CrapFlix for whatever else I am "missing"

doesnt work for me. xbox doesnt support MKV. i have to run movies from my PC to my WDTV or using plex they will transcode and play on the chreomcast.
its really a questions of having TOO many choices for me.
having said all that..i turn to the chromecast more and more..its just so easy..and the wifey can use it from her phone too.

same here
I have Xbox, smart blu ray, smart TV...and then a Roku hooked up to that same TV because the Roku is just better than the other options

my advice: set it up on the fastest computer you have, you'll have to use a laptop if you want to 'cast' it to a tv since you can move around the house with it. do you have anything besides xbox? not sure what else supports it besides roku, raspberry pi and chromecast.
make sure you LIKE it from desktop first (since that's free) before paying the $5 to use it from your phone.

Media Center on a fairly beefy dedicated laptop would be my plex option...I'm definitely going to work on setting it up this weekend...I'm guessing since you were/are against it, it has to be pretty nice..
