I'm about to pull the trigger on this from Massey's here in Nola.
Any opinions from the OB on this boat?

Great boat for big water. Narrow and fast.
It will not be as stable as others (Ride), but if you are trying to cover water it will be great. Not wide enough to stand but no big deal.

Primarily will be used for river camping and marsh fishing, beach trips too.
It looks stable enough for me I believe (6'1" 200), plus I am thinking my dog will want to ride, bitch can't be told no.
Should I go ahead and get the rudder too?

I have a rudder on the hobie, for fishing, I think it's great. Does well while drifting wind blown banks and throwing heavy baits with a lot of drag. Keeps the yak going in the direction you want to go. Way less time spent paddling trying to right yourself.

I've used my friends Hobie w/ rudder before and was impressed with the stability even in some very heavy chop.

Tarpon 160 max weight is 335 so the 140 is less than that. How much do you weigh and how much gear do you bring for camping? And a dog?

If you're using it for camping, I'd look for something with a little more dry storage. Found this deal last night.
Nevermind, it sold but check there before you buy something new. There's always deals popping up.

The one I am looking at looks like the storage should be fine, the locking hatches were a plus for me.
It's a 14' boat, I'm 6'1 200 lbs, dog is a lab and she rides pretty calmly.

Good. I'd be less than truthful if I said I didn't want to smoke my cousin in his 12' perception

With this in mind, and a pup no matter how calm she rides, skip the tarpon and go for a Ride 135. Slower but not enough to really matter for your usage and you'll be thankful for the extra weight capacity and stability later. The tarpon 140 will float you just fine, but with the load you'll be putting in it, you'll greatly reduce the performance it was designed for.

Ride 135 is THE all around kayak IMO.
I also think the Ride would suit you better. Tarpon owners have one thing in mind and that is speed/distance coverage.
Ride has tons of storage while camping, large tankwell for your dog, elevated seat option and you can stand up and dance on it.
Throw a rudder on it, elevated Air Pro seat and call it a day.

Definitely get the rudder. It's night and day difference on performance. I ordered mine without a rudder and then turned around and ordered one a month later. It was more expensive to do it like that but I didn't think I really needed it. I was wrong.

How does the Ride compare price wise? The tarpon I'm looking at runs 1100 give or take.
Just checked, they're pretty similar in price.
Thanks for all the advice, that Ride 135 looks pretty legit, if it's in the store I'm gonna be quite tempted to make a move on that one!

Ride is the same price range. KILLER kayak, so versatile.
Obviously try before you buy when dropping that kind of cash, but definately check it out.

I usually prefer to buy local but if you can't, check out Hook1 or Austin Kayak, both great companies I've done business with in the past. Shipping is less than local taxes usually and I got mine in 3 days.
