In 1973, singer Jim Croce was killed in a plane crash in Natchitoches. He had played at Northwestern and was on his way to Austin College in Sherman, Texas. I learned last night that my Uncle attended Austin College at the time and had planned on going to the show.

Out of curiosity, anyone here attend Croce's last performance at Northwestern?

Doubt many on the OT know who Jim Croce is much less that he died in Louisiana.

Didn't his pilots basically crash the plane because they were coked up?

No - but I know the guy that drove him to his plane. An NSU student at the time - he would later be my father's assistant manager when Pops Midnight ran the infamous Lighthouse Club in Alexandria, Louisiana from 1976 to 1980.

Car Wash Blues

"Well, I had just got out from the county prison
Doin ninety days for non-support
Tried to find me an executive position
But no matter how smooth I talked
They wouldnt listen to the fact that I was a genius
The man say, we got all that we can use."

The man was a great song writer.

No loss whatsoever. It is hilarious how people put celebrities on such a pedastal that they think they are gods...

My brother was a student at NSU at the time. I think he still has the news clippings from the Natchitoches paper (or the Current Sauce) of the event.

I was at Northeast at the time. We were all pretty shocked when the news was broadcasted. Very saddened as he was just in his prime. The way his music survived him is a testament to that. Decent melodies and very good lyrics.

My dad was at the show right before and at the airport when he crashed. Pops was QB and pitcher for the NW at the time

Not a Croce song out there that I don't like

Link to NSU Current Sauce (student newspaper). Link opens to article on the day of the concert, with the article (Sep 25 issue) about the crash four pages later.

NSU Current Sauce Sep 18, 1973

Somewhere a former student has a last pic of comedian George Stevens, a George Carlin wannabe who also died, stopping in mid act to pose with his finger up his nose.

No, but one day I will own one of the 73 Martin D-21s with his signature and a 1973 dime in the 3rd fret
