Houma has some decent "real mex" if you look around. Taqueria La Magnolia on Prospect (good tamales), Taqueria DF on Grand Caillou, Taqueria El Jalisco (where I had the surreal experience of eating a taco while watching a ranchera music video version of Hank William's "Jambalaya"). A little Spanish helps, but I've found people to be pretty friendly at all three.
There used to be a tortilleria near the Vietnamese grocery store on Prospect, it had tacos on the weekends only. Dunno if it's still open or not.

I used to date a girl in Houma a while back. She used to drag me to La Casa when I visited, and I always hated it. I guess it was on par with the Cuco's of the world. The locals acted like it was better/more authentic then anything you could get in Mexico City.
