Watch Bottle Shock and then go to Kunde Winery, that is where they filmed it, plus they have great wines.

Gary Farrell in Russian River for amazing pinots
Truett Hurst also has great reds and is really relaxed

Truett Hurst is over in Dry Creek Valley and it does have some great wines. And if you were there in the winter you could see the Steelhead running/spawning which is really cool.

For a bare bones, great pinot experience, consider Dutton Goldfield in RRV. You won't feel important, but you can really get great info on wine and taste some fantastic pinots. It's a wine, rather than wine country, experience.

For sparklings, Domaine Carneros in Napa has great views and is an easy visit with or without reservations. Assuming you have any time to over to Napa, of course.
