before you spend a penny, you better check to see if comcast is rolling out docsis 3 in your area. if they are, you'll be right back here in a couple months buying another new modem.

eta, comcast DISABLED my older modem remotely to force me to buy/rent a new docsis 3 compliant model.

Thanks, I am TWC. Just ask them if they are going to be moving to Docsis 3?

yes. just make sure you aren't investing in something that you wont be able to use in a year.

you can't firmware update a docsis2 to docsis3. its hardware.

but my SB6141 shipped with outdated firmware, which I didn't realize until going through several "technicians." I was paying for the 50+mbps package, but I was only getting 25+mbps tier speeds. I thought it was just a mistake in provisioning my modem the first time, but after having them do it two or three times, I started doing my own research and determined the cause.

If you're on one of the higher tier plans, tell Cox to check for updated firmware. You will absolutely need to connect to a level 2 technician (or whatever they call the knowledgeable ones); the low-level techs only know how to reprovision modems and tell you how to reboot your PC and router and modem. If you email help@cox.com you may actually get someone knowledgeable right off the bat. That's what ultimately worked for me to get the newer firmware pushed through.

Interesting. My parents use a SB6141 and have the Premier package from Cox (~50 mbps), yet their download speeds range from 3-10 mbps, while their upload speed consistently exceeds 15 mbps.

This may be something I need to assess the next time I visit.

I bought this modem/router combo a few months back for Cox and it works great. Plus for only $25 it was worth the risk. No problems so far.

Good luck getting a cable company to tell you their plans.

FWIW, they can support both D2 and D3 modems, and I think it's got to be typical for them do so for long periods of time. It's not like moving to D3 immediately obsoletes D2 modems. That would be quite stupid; think of all the end user equipment they would have to replace! I know I used my D2 modem on Cox for some period of time before replacing it with D3 to take advantage of channel bonding and finally solve the primetime slowness that repeatedly plagued the service for months at a time. That was several years ago, and Cox still supports D2 modems for people who have been using them all this time.
