Big contract, weak smile.
quote:
Mauricio joins us from Southampton where he guided them to their highest-ever Premier League finish of eighth place last season.
During his 18 months at St Mary's, Mauricio also oversaw the progress of home-grown stars such as Luke Shaw, Adam Lallana, James Ward-Prowse and Calum Chambers.
Mauricio built his coaching reputation in Spain with RCD Espanyol, winning admirers across Europe for his high pressing attacking brand of football as well as for prioritising the development of young players from the side's youth setup before his departure in November, 2012 after almost four years in charge.
Mauricio enjoyed a highly successful playing career, making his debut in 1988 with Argentinian side Newell's Old Boys at the age of 16 and winning the Argentine Primera División with them in 1991. Two spells at Espanyol followed from 1994, sandwiched between time with Paris Saint-Germain and Bordeaux. He won two Copa del Rey titles with Espanyol and also earned 20 international caps with Argentina.
Commenting on the appointment Chairman Daniel Levy said:
"In Mauricio I believe we have a Head Coach who, with his high energy, attacking football, will embrace the style of play we associate with our Club. He has a proven ability to develop each player as an individual, whilst building great team spirit and a winning mentality.
"We have a talented squad that Mauricio is excited to be coaching next season."
Speaking on his appointment, Mauricio Pochettino said:
"This is a Club with tremendous history and prestige and I am honoured to have been given this opportunity to be its Head Coach.
"There is an abundance of top-class talent at the Club and I am looking forward to starting work with the squad.
"Tottenham Hotspur has a huge following across the world and I have great admiration for the passion the fans show for this team. We are determined to give the supporters the kind of attacking football and success that we are all looking to achieve."
Mauricio is joined by Jesús Pérez (Assistant Head Coach), Miguel D'Agostino (First Team Coach) and Toni Jiménez (Goalkeeper Coach) with whom he previously worked at both Southampton and Espanyol.

This is not a transfer.

Only time will tell, but I think it's blessing in disguise if Spurs got Pochettino because Van Gaal went to United.
It certainly will change a lot of their transfer rumors since I'd guess Pochettino will be crazy about a lot of the big names who were in question like Paulihno and Bentaleb.
Wonder if Soldado will go back to a Spanish contender? Like replacing Costa?

I wonder what his means for their squad and keeping them there? 2/3 of their team is seemingly linked to bigger clubs...
Ive read that the owner wants to sell the club, but I'm not sure...
I kinda hope this means Spurs go in for Lallana and drive the cost up past what we value him at (not that I think he's a bad player, just too much ££)

You guys will spend more than the 60 mil that was put out there
Will be interesting who you sell b/c you can't take any more 50mil years in the red before the dogs start sniffing around.
Also so an interesting stat this morning on tv comparing Ponchettio to Sherwood and how Sherwood in his limited time at Spurs pretty much had a better record.

I didn't even look at the name to be honest. I just saw "to Spurs, 5-year deal" and jumped on it. No fricks given.

They need to sign Moyes or Laudrup ASAP.
The longer they are managerless the more likely they are to lose everyone.

Not sure whats so funny about that, but I hope we do... IMO that £ amount is arbitrary... something that some journalist contrived...
I'm not too worried about us financially, we earned the most TV money in the EPL last season, have CL this year and are improving our stadium situation. Plus, I know that a lot of our loss was FSG paying off the debt that we incurred with the old, new stadium designs that were scrapped (cleaning up H&G's mess)... Plus we have been signing quite a few sponsorship deals the past couple of years... We are in good shape!

Hooray for having a manager. I'm just glad there won't be anymore transfer rumors for a managerless club.

How much say so did the managers have in the past? or was it all Levy and this past season, Baldini?

Lol 5 year deal. That seems like a pretty logical thing to do based on the past 20 years of Tottenham history.

I think it's a good move for Spurs. Breaks the cycle of hiring rejects of bigger clubs.

No one really seems to know for sure.
However, Lamela, Paulihno, Chiriches and Eriksen (the attempt at Lovren too) have Baldini's influence written all over them though since he was heavily involved with negotiating for them over the previous 2 seasons at Roma.

Right. I don't know either how much input a manager has...but I would think it's got to be easier to convince a player to transfer in knowing who the manager is. Also, I would HOPE they would take the manager's wishes into account on at least some level.
