Mainieri said he likes knowing precisely when his game starts. He doesn't want to wait around for weather or for another game to finish. Sees it as an advantage. Said that in interviews last year.
The 7 pm game on Friday always starts at 7. So that's kind of a dumb excuse.
LSU does it because it's an LSU tradition. It wouldn't look bad if Mainieri said that.

Unless bad weather pushes it. Which is why he wants the first game.

Unless the first game goes to extras or something. The first game starts at 3. It's not that unlikely that it could go long for some reason and push back the start game.
I can definitely see how it's an advantage to play the 3 o'clock game for day 1. It's more likely to start on time... guaranteed to finish early enough that you guys get a full night's rest... I wish we played the late game, but it doesn't bother me much, and it is the smart thing to do baseball wise. Considering how much flack Mainieri gets for his baseball decisions, this is one you really can't argue with.

Has nothing to do with "tradition". Mainieri said he doesn't want his players having to wait around all day to play while others are already playing. In the past he's also made the weather argument. There isn't a "tradition" angle here and Mainieri wouldn't look bad regardless of which time he chose.
