It's not my first time playing them. I know how 2 ends.

The HL/Portal universe (they are are in the same universe) are by far my favorite series. I have played through HL2 at less 25-30 times and the episodes 10-15.
HL3, if ever released, will be when Aperture Science finally plays a big roll in HL. The Combine want the teleportation technology (Portal Guns) which allow the ability to TP in current Space/Time. The combine can only TP outside and To/From different Space/Time and Universes.
Saying all this, IDK if it will ever happen. The ending in HL2:E2 was right where Gab wanted it, a Steven King lost hope type of feel.

It's a great story. Some of the story details you have to get from resources outside of the game which I always like having to do.
I'd like to see the g-man story arc wrapped up, who seems to be the true ultimate evil in the series so far.
I'd also like to see Cpl. Shephard make an appearance.

Now we don't know this yet.
He could or couldn't, I stand by my theory of his employer wanting to stop/take down the Combine.

Started and never finished his PoV story of what happened at Black Mesa.
He may come into help someone in the end, but really do not think so.

Also everyone who have not or its been a long time since playing HL2, please use the 2013 FakeFactory MOD. This thing is great!

Also, for those of you who do not know how closely tied Black Mesa(HL) and Aperture(Portal) are, check out the Doug RatMan comics. He is the crazy guiding Chell.
At one point in an in game Ratman audio clip he mentions a ship being stolen from Aperture Science. What other ship could this be but the Borealis

This could be true, but as of right now, it seems like he orchestrated the resonance cascade to lure the combine to earth to defeat them, which would mean that he's doing his own thing at humanity's expense.
I'm also assuming he didn't predict that the vortigaunts would side with humanity after Nihilanth gets killed.

Seems like?
He most defiantly did, he brought the Xen crystal to Black Mesa and suggested using. He was and has been behind it.
Now yes, the Vorts see G-Man as a threat but they also are running from the Combine, i'm kind of at a cross roads here. Maybe the Vorts just do not like the fact that G-Man has basically made Gordan a slave to do his bidding just like he did to Nihilanth.

Freeman is essentially the God of the Vortigaunts right now.

lol
Well, they ran from another planet to take refuge on Xen and the Combine followed. A portal opened to Earth and they came here to take refuge again hoping the Combine would not follow but they have.
I'm just so unsure about the Vorts, but then again the Vorts are unsure about G-Man. It seems like G-Man works for the ex-universal dominate force in the universe until The Combine took control. So they see him as evil because his employers' probably ruled similarly to The Combine with a tyrannus type rule and order.

HL and HL2 are such good/well rounded games, they told stories in FPS format for the first time until maybe System Shock and no doubt Bioshock.
These titles, at the release, changed the industry and brought us something we have never seen before. In my opinion, HL2 is the greatest game ever created. It has great physics and excels as an FPS along with a great story. The story maybe isn't on Bioshock's series level, but the feeling of lost hope and desperation feel so real, it puts more life into the game than anything else.

As it should since I am still not convinced that they are actually working on the games in a meaningful manner. Valve has never made it to 3 so that fact that two different games are being worked on is suspect.

We will see the conclusion of both Black Mesa and Aperture's efforts finalized in a HL3 some day. I'm like you, idk how much of a project it is compared to an idea.
This has been the thought ever since the Borealis' chapter was removed during HL2 BETA. Believe I mention that above, not sure.
EDT:
LFD3 Open World Multi Player Survival Game =)
Probably will come before the Free-Man kills an Advisor.
