They know how to play the game. When you can't make a rational argument:
1. Claim racism.
2. Let the white guilt and/or black power emotions of the judges gestate.
3. Claim your prize.
in the other thread there was discussion (in the article) about the traditional debaters forming a new league for traditional debate...you guessed it, they were called racist
it's in the atlantic article
quote:
To counter this trend, Hardy and his allies want to create a “policy only” space in which traditional standards for debate will be enforced. However, this is nearly impossible to do within the two major debate associations, CEDA and the National Debate Tournament (NDT), as they are governed by participants and have few conduct enforcement mechanisms. For instance, while CEDA and NDT’s institutional anti-harassment policy would normally prohibit the term “****” as it was used at the recent Indiana University tournament finals, none of the judges penalized the competitors that used it. In fact, those debaters took home prizes.
14 schools expressed interest in sending debaters to Hardy’s proposed alternative tournament, scheduled to occur last month. But after word got out that a group of mostly white teams from elite universities were trying to form their own league, Hardy and his supporters were widely attacked on Facebook and other online forums. Ultimately the competition didn’t happen, purportedly because of logistical issues with the hotel venue. Nonetheless, Hardy wrote in an email that a “toxic climate” has precluded even “strong supporters of ‘policy debate’ from “publicly attach[ing] their name to anything that might get them called racist or worse.”

Why is anyone surprised? It's just a reflection of society. Too many of a certain race in prison? The rules are wrong and... racism. Too many illegitimate children? Society is racist.
Is it any wonder why these young ladies debated the War Powers Act and went the racism route? If someone opposes ACA, they're racist. If someone carps about the deficit, they're terrorists. Check my sig line.
The left has been pounding that one piano key through the bottom of the piano.

Hardy and others are also disappointed with what they perceive as a lack of civility and decorum at recent competitions, and believe that the alternative-style debaters have contributed to this environment. “Judges have been very angry, coaches have screamed and yelled. People have given profanity-laced tirades, thrown furniture, and both sides of the ideological divide have used racial slurs,” he said.
This isn't debate at all but the same type intimidation tactics that are used nowadays to quell real debate and force one side to capitulate to the other.

Sadly these Towson kids are fat.
Someone should have explained in the rules to them that fatties dont have opinions, and arent to be treated as people.
maybe that would have helped.

I actually didn't watch the video of the debate and only read the article. It seems as though there are 2 sets of rules depending on who you are and what irrelevant subject you bring up. Case in point:

At one point during Lee’s rebuttal, the clock ran out but he refused to yield the floor. “frick the time!” he yelled.

what an articulate young scholar.
Perhaps space-time itself is "racist".

The Black Panthers would make an excellent debate team with this format.

No, just the whities that control it.

Well, THAT is obvious.
In EVERY movie involving "Space-Time"...the negro astronaut is gonna die within the first 15 mins.
FACT!

Have not read the whole thread and only watched very little of the video.....have they removed "white privilege" from the debate format? And, if a black person uses the n-word to make their point, can a white debater use the n-word to counter?
ETA: If a black debater uses rap to present his argument, can a debater with Italian lineage sing opera in his native language to make his point? In both cases very few people can understand it anyway.

Joe Leeson Schatz, Director of Speech and Debate at Binghamton University, is encouraged by the changes in debate style and community. “Finally, there’s a recognition in the academic space that the way argument has taken place in the past privileges certain types of people over others,” he said. “Arguments don’t necessarily have to be backed up by professors or written papers. They can come from lived experience.”
Wow.

Of course it is. Everything is racist.

LOS ANGELES --- A space-themed, talking Hallmark graduation card is being pulled from store shelves because of the card’s reference to a black hole.
But members of the Los Angeles NAACP say the message sounds like "black whore" in the card's audio recording. That's how they hear it, and they say it's racist, KABC-TV in Los Angeles reported.
"That was very demeaning to African-American women when it made reference to African-American women as whores, and at the end it says 'watch your back,'" said Leon Jenkins of the Los Angeles NAACP.

I don't necessarily disagree with this but when the subject to be debated is the President's war powers and someone starts arguing about the US govt's war on minorities, then personal experiences about profiling are irrelevant.

How is an opposing team supposed to rebut a personal experience and what criteria can be used to validate that the experience is even factual?

I said it in a thread last week, but this is another example of Western liberalism jumping the shark.

I understand your point, but let's just say that one of the debaters on the subject of the President's war powers was a combat veteran. Wouldn't that particular experience be relevant to the subject? Should that person's experience be kicked out as conjecture because it cannot be validated?
