Trainer Art Sherman says California Chrome might not pursue a Triple Crown bid in the Belmont Stakes if New York officials won't allow the colt to wear a nasal strip.

Some horses, like humans, wear nasal strips to assist breathing.
Two years ago, I'll Have Another won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness while wearing nasal strips. New York officials told his team the colt couldn't wear one in the Belmont. The issue became moot when I'll Have Another was scratched the day before the race because of a leg injury.

California Chrome has been given approval to wear a nasal strip during the 146th Belmont Stakes, keeping alive the horse's chance of becoming the sport's 12th Triple Crown winner.

If Belmont doesn't allow this, they should be stripped of their triple crown spot.

Smart move to air this to the public now and put pressure on the Belmont to not be so narc ish
If kd and ps allow it it's absurd for the Belmont not to.

What is their reasoning? Performance enhancing?

Good
Move third leg to NOLA
forget this east coast bias

I saw a few tweets from CC haters before the preakness talking about not being able to use the nasal strips in NY. They were trying to jinx him so he would lose.
As far as the competitive advantage:
Nasal strips, produced by Flair LLC, are self-adhesive strips about three inches wide that provide "spring-like force" to the soft tissue overlaying a horse’s nasal passages. According to the company, eight peer-reviewed studies have shown the nasal strips reduce exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhaging, more commonly known as bleeding, by reducing the collapse of the soft nasal tissue during exercise.

I predict in this age of Twitter and public outcry the Belmont will wind up caving.
Go CC!
Go CC!

This is going to blow up.
I figured it would too. It did in 2012 even after IHA's trainer said it would be a non issue with his performance.
I saw as many tweets talking about the nasal strips than I did about CC's cough leading up to the preakness.

Can the horse not run without a nasal strip? The trainer would give up a Triple Crown chance over a nasal strip?

He'd probably cave in the end and run CC but why not take the threats public and see if you can't get the Belmont to back down first?

He'll still go even without the strip. I remember all this crap going down for ill have another. They made a big deal because the horse was with o'neill (who i actually like a lot). If they ask, New York will probably let them.
Fwiw, husband's old boss from years ago used them on every horse. Husband said they make no difference.

That's it, put an asterisk by all of Jerry Rice's receiving records.

It depends. If that is the change from his 2013 form to his 2014 change, i wouldn't go either. If you had a horse that never wore blinkers before and was running up the track and you put blinkers on him and he became a derby winner, and the belmont tol you thtat you could not wear blinkers, you would bascially be taking an allowance horse to the Belmont which is moot.
And Art Sherman is not Doug O'Neil. I assure you that if ARt says he isn't going he isn't going. Art Sherman isn't dying lol. Art is Hey oats and water old school.

I thought Nasal strip was another horse when reading the title

I see nowhere where he says he isn't going. This whole thing is getting blown completely out of proportion. Lots of things have changed with the horse from last year.
New shoes.
New jockey.
Hell, some can say he's just matured.
I do not think he's winning from nasal strips. I also think if art asked, the stewards would oblige.
They had a hard on for o'neill and were after him any way they could. That's when all this ny times bs started, too.
Travel arrangements have been made for chrome to head to Belmont Tuesday. I don't think for a second he doesn't run based on this.

I thought the OP mistyped nasal drip.

My favorite part about the whole debacle was the NY stewards crying about how they were protecting the bettors in case it fell off in mid race. Seriously? It is called gambling for a reason. Do they refund the money when a shoe goes flying mid race? Not to mention, this is New York we are talking about. I am a pretty low-key, big-day bettor, but occasionally I will venture into every day racing, and I stopped betting New York a LONG time ago because it was obvious, unless you were concentrating on that circuit, one has a very hard time beating the "inside" money.
