You cut a player and you still pay him the money you owe him, but you can stretch it out over 2 times the years remaining on his deal + 1. In the scenario I mentioned, you convince him to take $11 to leave instead of $15 to stay next season, and you stretch that $11 million out over 3 years, or $3.3 million per year. There are some other aspects to the stretch provision where if he signs a deal with another team you can offset part of your cap hit. It's not a full offset though, so in the ball park of $3 million of dead cap space over 3 years is probably a good estimate of what would happen if we stretched Gordon.

The good thing about the stretch vs. the amnesty is that it's actually part of your cap, so you don't have to convince Mr. Benson to eat $15 million, Demps just has to live with the dead cap space.
