So, 2 guys that have never played a meaningful snap in the NFL? I'll give you one, but not both.

ETA: 3 guys, but 1 is a 1st rounder and a badass. So, I didn't count him, but he still counts.

I was wondering that, too

I remember there being a lot of discussion last year if he was even eligible, because he was right on the border of eligibility.
LINK
quote:

A player is deemed to have served a season on the practice squad if he remains on the practice squad for at least three weeks. Players are eligible to be on the practice squad for two seasons. Players can be eligible for a third practice squad season if their team maintains no less than 53 players on the active/inactive list at all times.

After spending the end of the 2010 season and most of the 2011, 2012 and 2013 campaigns on the practice squad, working with the scout team, as well as seeing action in the preseason, Tanner will compete for a roster spot. Was on active roster for season opener vs. Atlanta, Sept. 8, but declared inactive.

Looks like it's either 53 or cut for Tanner this year.

they refused to draft any WR's. What makes you think they will trade for one? They obviously believe strongly in JFF's running skills

they don't have to wait for one to mature or develop or have any concerns. A veteran can step in, be a leader for some young guys and bring stability for a young qb.

it ain't happening though but.....

Very interested to see how Coleman plays in the preseason.
With his height, he could be a great red zone weapon if he develops

That's what I was thinking as well. If Coleman makes it, it could be at Toon's expense.

If they keep Coleman and Toon, we could have the "Jump Ball" formation in the Red Zone. Put Colston, Graham, Toon and Coleman on the field have Brees toss it up...that would be something to watch!

No doubt Tanner is gone. He was barely good enough to make the squad last year for one week before we replaced him with Meachem because we didn't want to guarantee the whole year for Meach(if a vet is signed to the 53 on opening week his whole contract is guaranteed that year).

So while technically he made the opening 53, he was never going to stay.

And the only reason we signed Meach was to take over Morgan's role which Morgan took over from Meachem. Both are good in that role though.

Colston, Stills, and Cooks are the only locks, so that leaves 2 or 3 spots open(I think without Sproles we go back to 4 HBs and 6 WRs).

Realistic options are Toon, Morgan, Meachem, and Coleman unless one of these other UDFAs really show out.

I really think one of Morgan or Meachem makes it(run blocker and play action deep threat) with a very slim chance both do if we keep 6. I would say Morgan has a leg up being younger but the injury leaves that in question.

That leaves Toon and Coleman battling for the other spot which is more in the Colston role.

So it will likely look like this:
Colston
Stills
Cooks
Morgan/Meachem
Toon/Coleman

And if we keep a 6th it will be whoever showed out better but lost the role battle.

Jones seems to fit the better mold of typical NFL success

I could see them having a shot too. They certainly aren't ruled out. Coleman could be an epic "bust" much like Eric Martin last year and one of these guys could be better than Stills.

But the projections say otherwise and I think that's where most people are coming from. They could be right or wrong for various reasons but we need a baseline to start from.

Not being familiar with these guys, is there anything in particular that you can tell us about them that could be to their advantage?

i dont know much about either, just basing it off their size and measurables, coupled with their production.

We still need a return man. Morgan could possibly fill that role. Cooks is by all accounts a mediocre return man so I wouldn't say he's a lock for there.
