I realize that every single year there will be a thread exactly like this based around an LSU player, but I can't help myself.
In a related vein, what was the name of that dude who was on the warpath for literally years because we didn't use a 2nd round pick on Skyler Green? EG had so many rofls at his expense that I kinda miss him...

He cannot cover, takes poor angles
And showed zero improvment in 2013.
The bar has been set so high for the guys playing safety at LSU.
Wish him well though.

So on record you like the Sunseri pick and think he will be a contributor on my New Orleans Saints?

Sunseri was starting over Landon Collins in 2013 and had two pick 6's early in the year.
Dude ran a 4.5 6 months after tearing his ACL.
He cannot be terrible. FACT

Sunseri is considered a QB of Bama's D, he was starting over Landon Collins f memory serves me correct and his father is a defensive coach @ Tennessee (maybe DC)...
Loston has zero ball hawking skills, and it pains me to say something negative about one of my beloved tigers!
Sunseri has potential to be special IMO
Dammit didn't see the post above, true info! I hate drafting Bama players but it was right move!

It's a fifth round pick. If he's a good st player for 3-4 years, what's the problem?
drafting starters late not only is how you build NFL teams, but why our fanbase is so confident in this regime's abilities

Drafting ST players is almost as important. If you get a few good years out of a guy in that capacity it's a success.

i see ST guys as 7th and UDFA types
5th should be guys still capable of possibly being starters. i mean ignore the saints...look at the 49ers and Seahawks to see why those pics are important. they build so much of their teams in those picks
and also, when we traded our 3rd rounder, the argument was "we'll make it up in the 5th". now i'm not hating on sunseri, but he's a very limited player who doesn't appear to have the physical skills to be a consistent NFL starter. even this board is resigned to him being a ST guy.
consistency is important
oh, and craig loston sucks in terms of NFL projections. if this were the 70s, he'd be a great player to draft. he can't cover and looks to literally knock heads off. he has negative ball skills

Ok, kind of a pandering post; but it's true.

Draft Profile
You need these kinds of guys. He could develop into a solid player. He tackles well, and could he be much worse than Roman in coverage?

STRENGTHS Good size and big hands. Reads and reacts quickly. Assignment-sound and well-coached. Drops downhill to support the run and has experience in deep-zone coverage. Dependable wrap tackler. Good production. Vocal leader who commanded the secondary and made all the calls. Stood out on special teams as a younger player and has the makeup to be a special-teams captain in the pros.

He's also pretty fast.

I like Sunseri he has a knack for the ball and will come up and make the big hit..I don't understand the hate for this guy.
Posted on 5/11/14 at 12:25 pm to Tiger Nation 84
When I take off my bama hater glasses as long as we don't ask him to cover wrs he will do fine. He made plays and that is what you want from a safety
Posted on 5/11/14 at 12:35 pm to 41bengal
This board has gone full retard
Posted on 5/11/14 at 12:43 pm to Tiger Nation 84
Both of them suck. Sunseri was probably drafted more for his ST potential than starting on defense potential.

quote:Then you'd be disappointed in most 4th, 5th and 6th rounders. Most of those guys are career backups and special teamers.

Sure you can get good guys late, but those are either flyers or gems(Carl Nicks would be the first and Jahri Evans would be the second). Teams don't draft most of these guys expecting them to be starters(some of the flyers sure). You always hope they can, but that isn't the expectation.
1st rounders are expected to be your foundation. Most are expected to start right away or play big roles. Some teams will take someone a little more raw with extremely high upside and those guys may sit a year but are still expected to become a foundational player.
2nd rounders are expected to be starters(some immediate, some within the first couple of years).
3rd rounders are expected to be role players and/or part time starters(either immediate or within the first couple of years).
4th rounders are expected to be capable backups and/or core special teamers(flyers here could be expected to start or be role players).
5th rounders are expected to be special teamers and possible backups(a few flyers may have starting or role player aspirations).
6th rounders are expected to be special team hopefuls with backup aspirations(flyers here could become role players).
7th rounders are mostly flyer picks and special team fillers.
UDFAs expectations range between 5th-7th(because of the difference in teams boards and roster needs the range is wide).
Now of course that is the expectations of the rounds. That's not what always happens and everyone is hoping for gems and that their flyer picks pan out.
If you look at our picks, they all fall pretty much in line with the expectations.
Cooks is expected to be a foundational player.
Jean-Baptiste is expected to be a starter, most likely as soon as next year.
Fortt was a flyer pick in the 4th and is expected to be a core special teamer and possible replacement for Hawthorne in a part time starting role.
Sunseri is a bit of a flyer pick, but more of a safer 5th rounder. He is expected to be a special teamer and could eventually become a backup when Bush leaves.
Powell was a flyer pick and is expected to be a special teamer and potential backup to Haralson.
Rooks, being an offensive lineman, is expected to have more backup aspirations as all Olinemen really are used for on special teams is blocking. He will compete with Harris and Jones for a backup tackle spot.
If you are expecting more from these picks than your expectations are out of line. Hope is a different matter.
We've gotten spoiled by our late round offensive picks. That is not the norm.
