No, I only had to deal with one which was bad enough. Mother's dementia was already bad enough and after my father died, she really started going downhill. Had to keep her in a nursing home the last ten years. That wasn't an easy thing to do, but at least I knew someone was looking after her 24/7, she was getting her meds, regular baths, a comfortable place to sleep, and three square meals a day.

I can tell everyone out there, if you can afford long term health insurance, buy it now.
The other way is to qualify them for Medicaid.

I dealt with both my grandparents having alzheimer's at the same time.
Wasn't that bad. Few hiccups every now and then

We took away his car and he calls bitching about it every 5-10 minutes screaming we stole his car, money, etc.

Damneold,
How do I qualify them for Medicaid? I thought they were already on it? I need to go see them now and will hang up and check back in later.

Some lawyer can chime in with the particulars, but it takes some planning ahead of time, you have to transfer assets out of their name so they're technically indigent. And it has to be done something like three years in advance of when you apply for medicaid.

My dad is 91 and has it. Sucks really bad. Thankfully my mom takes care of him while I'm in school.

Yeah. You can have a like $10k burial policy to your name and that's it

They're likely on Medicare
You have to be poor to get Medicaid

Sorry about what you're going through man. Hoping for the best for your parents. I have a question though. What's the difference between Alzheimer's and dementia?

Sal,
The business office managet at the nursing home should be able to help you get them qualified for Medicaid. Where are they in a nursing home?

Very sorry. Nursing home is the only option. Unless you have the time to devote 24/7.
Seen many people try. They spend so much of themselves and still take poor care of the parents. Structure of a nursing home may actually benefit them. After an initial period.

quote:medicaid rules vary by state. They will have to spend down assets to almost nothing, $3k in my state. There are income rules. And they do a look back to make sure assets were not transferred to family members in last five years. Medicare does not pay LTC costs except if someone goes right in from a hospital and does rehab and PT, and that only lasts 120 days. If they qualify for Medicaid, it pays everything. If either parent is a wartime veteran, look into the VA Aid and Attendance pension.
How do I qualify them for Medicaid?

Either one veterans? My wife's dad was a vet. Paid a large amount of her mom and dad's 24/7 in house care. Hassle to get lots of paperwork but they paid. Hope I die before I get that old.

Alzheimer's is the worst. I only have one memory of my grandmother, and she was alive for 20 years of my life.

Dementia is caused by Alzheimer's disease. Dementia is a collection of neurological symptoms that can be caused by several different diseases, one of which is Alzheimer's.
