Why Anthony Davis will be a Pelican through at least the 2019-2020 season

Many of the more casual Pelicans fans out there seem to be under the impression that Anthony Davis will have the ability to leave once his rookie contract is up. While this is technically true, this is not practically true.
The short version is, if Davis wants to leave in the best case scenario it would cost him $33 million over a 5 year period. In the worst case scenario it would cost him $100 million. How much would he have to hate it here to pass up that much money? Eric Gordon actually hated it here and he opted to go for the money rather than his freedom.
The long version is, there are 3 levels of Max contracts. For younger guys coming off their rookie deals you can get up to 25% of the salary cap, that's the $14-$15 million guys like Eric Gordon and Roy Hibbert have. Once you've been in the league long enough to reach your 3rd contract, you can get 30% of the salary cap, the $18-$19 million guys like Dwight and CP3 are getting. For guys that have been in the league forever, you can get up to 35% of the salary cap, guys like Kobe and Dirk making well over $20 million per year.
The new CBA has what is called the Derrick Rose rule where a player that makes multiple All Star or All NBA teams before his 2nd contract can actually get the more veteran version of the Max (30%) by extending with their current team. Based on the new cap figure Anthony Davis would sign a 5 year extension worth $110 million. The Derrick Rose rule wouldn't apply to him if he went to another team, which he could do if rather than signing a 5/$110 deal, 30% max with 7.5% raises, he chooses a 1 year deal for $9 million to gain his freedom, and then gets a 4/$67.5 deal, 25% max with 4.5% raises, from another team the following year. So not only is this $33 million less over a 5 year period, he also takes on a year of injury risk by signing the 1 year deal to gain his freedom. If he gets injured in that year he may never get another NBA dime and essentially he lost $100 million just to switch teams, but if he takes the Pelicans offer and the unthinkable injury happens, he still gets all $110 million.
So when can he leave like Melo/Dwight/CP3/LeBron/etc did? CP3 was traded 2 years before his deal was up because the last year on his deal was a player option, so technically he was traded in what could have been the last year of his deal. Most other superstars like those mentioned above were not traded until the last year of their deal. The last year of Anthony Davis next contract would be 2020-21 meaning the team needs to reach contention level by the 2019-20 season to keep him. That gives the team 6 offseasons including this upcoming one, to turn the Pelicans into a contender.
For those of you that are still shell shocked over losing CP3 and think the worst will always happen with this franchise, the worst is at least 6 seasons away with Anthony Davis. So snap out of it and stop posting trollish misinformation in threads.

I already knew this, but amazes me the amount of people who don't know this. I hear someone say this every time I hear a public conversation about the pels. AD will be here for awhile.

I'll take it
Hopefully we can actually be decent in that period of time

Great analysis especially with the new salary cap numbers included. What do you think of the idea that we should try to sign another impact player before Ad's second deal kicks in because this will be the last potential cap space we will have in a long time?

I've been on the "trade anything not in the core 4 to move Eric Gordon before the 2015 offseason" bandwagon for a while now. If Eric Gordon is still on this team come July 1st, 2015, Demps should be fired immediately, and I've been a long time Demps supporter.

In 6 years. In 2020 he will be 27.... That's when a lot of guys are peaking.
And he is this good right now.
Holy balls

Are we positive that we can't sign a free agent in the days between Gordon's contract expiring and AD's contract extension?
LINK
So, could we possibly sign a free agent in the morning and extend AD in the same afternoon? Or will Davis' contract have to be extended at the earliest time allowed?

116. What are the important CBA-related dates each season?
The following dates are referenced in the CBA, starting with July 1, which is the first day of the salary cap year. Any deadline which falls on a Saturday, Sunday or federal holiday is extended to the next business day.

I don't know honestly, it's not really clear. That's actually something BSS should ask Larry Coon when they have him on the podcast later this summer, so Aced if you're lurking, let your friend MM know.
The extension will be agreed to during the previous season. It would seem like cap chicanery for the team to be able to treat his cap space like the qualifying offer rather than the already agreed to extension.

I believe to give the 5 year extension to Davis, we would have to do it before the previous season starts, similar to washington and John Wall

Tldr. But I'll agree with it

Even then, in 2016 with Davis' extension, we will only have four players on the books (assuming we still have Rivers on the roster by then), totaling around $46M. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Say the cap is around $67 million for the '16-'17 season.
Evans: $10.2
Holiday: $11.0
Davis: $20.1
Rivers: $4.2 QO
If I'm looking at this correctly, that leaves us around $21M to chase free agents. Maybe we re-sign Anderson and another mini-max / a few role players, or maybe we sign a max player and fill out the roster with minimum contracts and the MLE.
Without Rivers, we will have close to $25 million in cap space. NOLA could be a mildly sought after destination if AD continues to progress into the true superstar we all think he will become. That's enough room to sign a Durant or Kevin Love type max.

Honestly, that might not be a bad situation. It doesn't help the here and now, but it truly opens doors down the road. I had not thought about it like that until today. Adding another true all star to a Davis/Holiday/Evans 2016 roster would make the Pelicans one of the most talented teams in the league.
Just for example, a
Holiday
Evans
Durant
Davis
minimum contracts
roster would never be beaten. Ever. And I'm not saying we will sign Durant. That would be one of the best of all possibilities. I'm just amazed that I haven't looked that far in advance until now.

I know it sounds a little absurd, but in that situation we would be looking to make a huge splash in free agency. I was just using Durant as an example, but it was a poor choice of an example. It probably takes some credit away from my point - that we would have ample space to sign a big name.

That arguably be the best team in the NBA in a very long time. The sheer talent would be insane.
Hell you'd still have 5-10 mil(I think) plus exceptions to fill out the roster.
A team of Davis/Durant would let guys come for cheaper to chase a ring.
