The reason for his sentence is the second shot. He caught them off guard, shot them, then when there was no apparent reasonable danger, he waited and shot em again.
That was his big problem. You can defend your home, but the second shot was criminal.

The reason was the recording. He could have shot them 15 times and still claimed defense.
