How do you foresee Colston's career ending?

Will he re-do his contract to meet his diminishing production? Will he retire young ish or will he want to play till he's old and gray? Will the Saints keep him around too long past his producing years? Will colston suit up in another uniform? Do we hang the big One Two up in the rafters?

I think they will have to cut him and take whatever cap hit is to be had
He won't retire and leave money on the table. I don't see him playing anywhere else
I vote yes. Most productive WR in Saints history during the best period in Saints history

Retirement.

Somewhere other than New Orleans.
I could see him in the Saints ring of honor.

You ask a lot of fricking questions.
Yes.
Somewhere in between. I don't think he'll retire soon, but he won't play til he's 38-40 cause of injuries.
Yes. See answer to question #1.
No.
Maybe. Is there criteria?

Honestly I think he sticks around as long as Brees is here, another 3-5 years. He'll redo his contract to fit the needs of the team and will retire a life long Saint and AFL team owner.

he's easily in the Saints HoF

depends on his numbers, if he cant hit at least 800yds/yr these next two years, we may push him out the door

The same way it commenced, quietly.

Its a business...if he can't produce up to his contract and won't take a paycut, he will be shown the door. Just the way it is

he'll turn 31 in June. He'll be semi productive at least another 2 years but its always about contract #'s not always production at first.

It's a combination, productivity and price have to balance each other out for both sides.
If he can catch 30 balls for 400 yards at a low cap hit then that's awesome and he will be kept around. If he can catch 30 balls for 400 yards but won't come off a 6 mill per year price tag then bye bye.
On the other hand if he's catching 65 balls for 1000 yards he's not going to play for peanuts.

Colston has been part of the golden era of Saints football, and has averaged 1000+ yards a season. He's easily one of the most underrated players in the NFL. If not for a nagging injury last season, he easily would've had 1000+ this season, once again.
Right now he sits at:
Marques Colston (30 years old)
Receptions: 607
Yards: 8337
Touchdowns: 63
Avg YPG: 71.3
For comparison to notable receivers around his age:
Vincent Jackson (31 years old)
Receptions: 422
Yards: 7362
Touchdowns: 52
Avg YPG: 59.9
Greg Jennings (31 years old)
Receptions: 493
Yards: 7341
Touchdowns: 57
Avg YPG: 66.1
Roddy White (32 years old)
Receptions: 685
Yards: 9436
Touchdowns: 55
Avg YPG: 66.9
Brandan Marshall (30 years old)
Receptions: 712
Yards: 9050
Touchdowns: 57
Avg YPG: 73.6
-Colston trails only Marshall, who many believe to be a top 5 receiver, in average yards per game.
-Colston has more touchdowns than any of the guys mentioned, including Marshall
-He trails Marshall in receptions, and Roddy White, although White has played longer and is 3 years older.
He is criminally underrated around the league, and is easily the best WR to ever play for the Saints. His numbers are better and more consistent than many big names wide receivers. I say he finishes his career here in his mid 30s. He will likely be in the top 20 all time in receiving touchdowns when his career is over, and all of this done as one of the greatest draft steals of all time.

I hope he calls up Jerry Rice and asks him for some tips on staying healthy and competitive as he ages

It's crazy how he's never made a Pro Bowl. He got robbed the most in 2012 when Fitzgerald got invited as an alternate.
Fitzgerald: 71 rec., 798 yards, 4 TDs
Colston: 83 rec., 1154 yards, 11 TDs
Every year the league tries to come up with ways to make people care about the Pro Bowl more. The first thing they should start with is ensuring that the players who deserve to be there actually get invited.

Colston still has a few good years left in him if the team is able to assemble better talent or get better production on the outside.
Colston has made a living out of the slot working the area of the field on top of the ILB & underneath the safeties. It takes a different mindset to work those areas like Colston does. He also does damage down the seams against zone coverages. With better help on the outside, I don't see why he still couldn't produce. Working those areas doesn't require tons of speed but it does require precise route running & a ton of heart, knowing that he will get hit hard at times.

Roddy White (33 years old)
Great post Coco.
As for contract, I think he may see an extension next year that still pays him decent(maybe around $5m per) but keeps him here throughout his career.
He's only signed through 2016(33) and I can see him playing until Brees retires so maybe add on 2-3 more years and spread his hit out.
Despite what everyone thinks he still put up very good numbers last year. Definitely way more consistent than almost any other WR in the league.
